Wood Flooring from Beneath the Surface
Sounds sort of like a title of a horror-flick, but Enviro Hardwood has essentially taken 'wood from beneath the surface' to make their eco-friendly flooring.
Using underwater saws, divers extract the perfectly preserved wood beneath Lake Brokopondo, Suriname, South America and mill it into flooring, decking and furniture grade lumber. Enviro Hardwood claims only recovered trees from the Amazon while leaving the live growth untouched.
The eco-brains behind the company is Joris Meester, who decided to found Enviro Hardwood on a single simple principle: To offer North American's the brilliant look of rare exotic hardwood flooring with an equally rare 100% green solution.
The lake that the wood is harvested from is named Brokopondo Lake. Brokopondo Lake was created in 1965 to provide hydroelectric power for Suriname. The size of the lake is approximately 1,000,000 acres. There are over thirty valuable tropical hardwood species standing in the lake. Through Vista Enterprises, Inc., Enviro Hardwood has the exclusive distribution rights for the harvested timber.
The harvesting of the trees in the lake is the only project of this nature in the World. Their project is completely environmentally friendly. No live trees are being harvested from the rainforest. The product also has international Smart Wood certification and meets all FSC requirements.
The harvesting project has a time span of more than 50 years. During that time, the company will provide an estimated 100 new jobs to the local community which is much needed for their economy.
