It's Time for Fall Planting!
Here's a quick hit list of veggies to plant, if your
climate allows. Fall is perfect for planting veggies that don't
need lots of direct sunlight.
First
thing is first. Select only the veggies that
you know you like to eat. One year I was a little ambitious and
grew a row of Chinese Kale. It turns out, I'm not a big fan of
it, but yet I had spent a lot of time, energy and money on cultivating
it.
Prepare
your plot. Spray the ground with water, and
then mix in compost (hopefully your own!) and add in additional
organic matter if you just did a summer garden.
Plant
your crops in rows. Intermix short-term and
long-term growers for continuous salad fare.
Watering
systems - consider using a soaker hose on
a timer. This will minimize your personal effort, and ensure that
your veges are getting adequate water.
What to Plant Right Now:
Greens - lettuce, chard, collard greens, kale, arugula. When you
go to harvest, simply cut about an inch from the ground. They'll
regrow for another salad soon.
Broccoli/Cauliflower
Radishes
Root Veges - Potatoes and Yams. Go for it! New potatoes
are especially easy, and fun for kids. They enjoy rooting around
for baby potatoes, and they make a great afternoon snack - quickly
boiled & tossed with olive oil and sea salt. Don't eat the green
ones.
Herbs - Herbs are fast growing, and also easy to
keep sprouting. Snip off bigger leaves and allow for regrowth.
