China Chopstick Scare

Ah, yet another reason to buy local. For years, as a nation collectively, we've relied on cheap goods from China. Now we're paying the price. From lead paint toys, poisonous dog food, tainted toothpaste to well...recycled, but uncleaned chopsticks, well you get the idea. Click here to read the Chopstick Scare article.

They say it takes 21 days to form a habit (good or bad, fortunately or unfortunately). For the next 21 days, try reading every single label, imprint, or sticker that you possibly can. Get an idea on where your food and goods are coming from.

While looking at labels, compare shop. How much more is it for the item made in the United States, or Canada? Products that don't have to travel as far don't take up as many natural resources. How much more would you be willing, or able to pay to stop the flow of shoddy, poisonous goods? Sometimes it's simply a matter of a few pennies - you'll be surprised.

While shopping, keep in mind that it's not China that created this hyper-need for cheap wares. Greedy companies in the U.S. determined to squeeze out unrealistic profits have set the stage for this trainwreck, and like junkies it's time for us to wean off the boat from China.

Reward the local farmer and manufacturer with your business, and hard earned dollar. You may be a bit poorer in pocket book in the short term, but you'll be richer in environment for the long term.
