hey, i have a question about dreads- do you need the wax? Cuz I think waxing my hair is kinda greasy and gross. Also, do they smell? Is it true that when you cut them out there are bugs? I've been thinking about doing it, but I have heard a lot of negative shit about them being smelly, itchy, gross.... lovenlight, linz------------------ one thing I can tell you, is you got to be freeeee~ |

I dreaded my hair by using a comb and my fingers and a rolled down window in a car is always good - just kidding, although for straight hair it makes it knot up like dreads - anyway - I bought some hemp salve and once I had the dread going I kept appling this hemp salve to each one to get the size and individual dread going - knottyboy is kind of the same deal, but you don't need it - I think it is used for people with short hair to get the dreads going quick and neat - when you wash your hair, just use a nice shampoo, I always used a tea tree oil shampoo - this is good to keep the nasties out, but don't use conditioner since it is used to detangle - the hemp salve was what I was using to try to keep the hair moisturized and looking healthy. You don't need to worry about bugs if you keep your head clean - dreads are just like any other hairstyle - be SMART about them - don't wear other people's hats or sleep on pillows that are not your own, etc. They are also not smelly if you wash your hair at least once or twice a week - your head will itch, but I think this is from the hair being pulled in directions, kind of like having a ponytail with that one hair that is pulled just that way that makes your head hurt or itch - you can buy a "brush" that is circular, I used to use one for my cats - it has a place in the top that is designed for your two fingers to go around and then the bottom is full of "fingers" like a regular brush - but with this one you can "brush" in a circular motion in certain areas that will not hurt the root of your hair, that or use your fingers to massage your head - that always feels oh so nice!!! my hair was past the mid point of my back when I started them and they, of course, shrunk to above my shoulders - |

All you really need is a roll of duct tape and some crunchy peanutbutter. Dreadlocks aren't a form of rocket science you guys.As far as the bugs go, you'll make alot of new friends! |

hey melissa.. my name's rane, and i've had dreads for about 5 months now.. first off i wanna say that they are the best things ever!! but you have really got to be sure that its what you want, because its a permanant thing.. u know? there's no turning back. A second thing you need to know, is that you cant just put a few.. the way dreads work, is that they pick up all loose hairs.. so those four or five dreads would end up eating all your loose hair, and you would end up with five mammoth dreads.. the real big gross ones! haha thats no fun... But if you wanna do your whole head.. i would recommend just sectioning off your hair.. and then taking the time, with a friend if you can, to back comb every section.. its real time consuming, i did mine myself adn they took 6 hours.. haha it was really tiring.. so get someone to help.. but after that, i just let mine go. i wouldnt reccomend wax, because not only is it realy unhealthy, and unnatural, but its a mess.. adn it usually makes the hair less likely to knot, and that defeats the whole purpose of a dread! u know? also, you should really let your hair go for about 2 or 3 weeks without washing after you do them.. then, wash about once a week with ivory, or any other cheap. non mostirizing bar soap.. but remember to wear a stocking over your head everytime you wash.. or it will lossin ur dreads.. thats all the advice i can think to give right now, if you have any other questions e mail me back, i would love to just chat about em, or about anything!! usmcchick7@aol.com peace, love and good karma RANE |

Hello! my hair is thick & wavy, but not nappy. the best way i found to start my dreds was to use dr. bronner's tea tree soap! (no, this is not an ad!) it dried my hair out enough to make it crunchy and tangly, but since it is oil based, it also left a slight waxyness that made it easy to form ropes. being a really strong concentrated soap, you will have very clean frizzy dreads that harden quicker than just not washing. the tea tree flavor is a plus because lice HATE it!!!! mint is great too! a fellow traveller called it tingly ballsack soap. its good for travelling too because u can use it for hair body teeth mouthwash dishes clothes anything!! & the bottle it comes in has some interesting god mother spaceship earth rants by dr. bronner printed very tiny all over it!!hmmmm.u can find it in most co-ops, health food stores. when your hair matts, be sure to rip it apart into indiviual ropes every once in a while, because it really just wants to make one huge hairball. to keep them apart, to help form them, beads rings and hair wraps are great bases, tho they will eventually be swallowed in the thicket. don't use conditioner. wax is a gross mess too. it also helps to twist & scrunch hair into ropes as it matts. the aim is to never let go of hair that naturally falls out of your scalp- dreads are beautiful lint balls. speaking of which, treat scalp for danruff once in a while. good luck!!! hey, just a tip... don't use any soap that will leave residue, that's what will cause mold. i use either plain castille soap, or tea tree castille soap (which ruth mentioned) to keep the bugs and mold away.i didn't use anything to start mine.. just let them flow and form how they pleased. i used a little bit of wax down the road, which really brought them all together. it's messy but helps a lot. it was a mixture of beeswax, shea butter, a little bit of olive oil, and a couple other things i can't remember. enjoy them! they're fun when you're skankin out to some reggae stylins one love |

damn kids........... just stop washing, stop combing, somtimes ya gotta rip em apart from each other, beads and rings help too, wax just makes em greasy, and they don't knot together(although it's a good look for a job interview or court) dr bronner's is a great things to use, after a few months when their already on thier way, WRING THEM OUT!!!! then they wont smell or mold, bugs are fun too, start a fea circus and last up, my secret ingredient.... my dog chews on em when im sleeping |

how much body does your hair have? if your hair is curly or thick get some FILTERED (you don't want little white chunks of stuff in your dreads) aloe vera juice and use it instead of shampoo for a couple months and rub your head in a clockwise direction when your hair is half dry. it will be sticky enough that the residue will hold the hair together in the early stages and when they start to lock up it will lengthen them each time you wash them with the aloe - every 1-2 months after you're locked. if you let the dreads separate naturally they will divide according to your natural growth pattern but you might end up with some bongos. if you want stringy dreads you might want to try braiding it and then letting the braids turn into dreads.when i had my last set of dreads i just rubbed my head clockwise for a few minutes a few times a day and wore hats until i locked. the curlier your hair is the faster it will lock. if it is superfine or straight you might want to get a perm or something. just tell whoever gives it to you that you want an afro or the tightest perm they can give you and use spiral or foam-covered wire rollers if your hair is longer. |

Okay, actually you can infact have only a few dreads, because im the type of person who changes her mind constantly, and i have three dreads, I have no tangling issues, they are perfect. |

Why don't you all get real? The only reason why people really grow dreads is because they do not wash or comb their hair. Please do not think I am self-rightous. Come on. Grow it forreal or get a job. Or do not get a job and just keep back-combing your hair like a little bitch. Just let it grow. Be forreal and true to yourself. | |
