I would like to travel to America (from England)but don't really know where to start! I would like to go somewhere hippie (goes without saying!) but also somewhere that is really into singer/songwriter-ish music so I can gig! Any suggestions very gratefully received! x x x |

Give Asheville, North Carolina a try - There are so many nice places of which you speak in the US so it is hard to say which one to try first - but Asheville has sort of become a hippy mecca lately - |

Come see the great golden coast of California--A great little hippie town is Arcata, CA. It is surrounded by dank beaches and about 30 miles north of it are the tallest trees in the world--the redwoods, baby, they are worth your time. |

Here in California there's also Berkeley and the Haight Ashbury district. The haight is in San Francisco and Berkeley is about a half an hour away, I think..If you go to Berkeley there's plenty of street vendors all the time, and a really good t-shirt place called Futura (it's becoming a little more main stream now, but it's still pretty good )It's a pretty cool place to go to, but I don't know if it's big enough... |

Madison, Wisconsin is pretty awesome as well and right now is about the best weather they get. It's a little like Berkeley; very liberal city with lots of GLBT friendly businesses, vegetarian friendly restaurants, street vendors, lots of alternative newspapers, food carts, street musicians, and a famous farmers market on Saturdays. We all are going to direct you to our neck of the woods and I will do no different.Colorado, my friend is a beautiful place to be, snow caped mountains, plenty of wilderness and an abundance of great places for open jams and organized jams as well. Boulder is a really great place for all of the above, although it is a bit pricy to live there, but to visit "the Hill" and "Pearl street" in Boulder is a great place to meet others like yourself. There are great places all over Colorado, even Denver has a great scene. Where ever your journey's take you be safe and enjoy the beauties that surround you.

I agree with groovingarnish. Not on the location but that we'll all tell you our neighborhood is the shiznit. Try out Athens, Georgia. Nice downtown and good folks. It has become very dancy (not in a good way) over the past few years but still a fine place to visit (Just ask the boys in Panic). And it ain't to far from Ashevegas. Peace! |

I also like:1 Burlington, VT (and the rest of VT for that matter) 2 Minneapolis, MN (very liberal politically) 3 Madison, WI and 4 Iowa City, IA (both university towns but not necessarily THAT hippie otherwise)

two years ago i lived & worked in yosemite national park. i loved it. i lived in a "neighborhood" called boystown, and if you can wrest yourself from partying too much, you can be left to your own creative devices. you will also have an audience when you wish to play. there is a drawback: you'd be working for delaware north corporation, and they make you take a drug test when you apply (i studied hard for mine LOL) LOTS of foreigners come to work there, it was a cultural smorgasbord! |

I would say check out Missoula Montana!!! It's a pretty headie town with irie vibes, not to mention breathtaking!! And while I'm not up on how easy it is to get gigs there I'm sure you will find family with like minded interests and talent to jam with or plug you into the scene! Good luck Much love |

You should check out the Gulf Coast. There's an awesome rock scene down here, and hippies abound aka Coastalinians. Plenty of cool people to chill and smoke with on the beach, drum circles, yoga studios, etc. Plus you can check out the hurricane damage. I believe that everyone should see it for themselves to truly understand. |

I'm all the hippie land you need. Haha. Sorry I know. I'm a nyc kat. Haha the devil finds work for idle hands is quite literally true, and we must resist this devil. If our hands are idle we have time to think, and then we can see what a huge deception we are under. We work and work to produce surpluses, and to produce things we don't need, then we believe that we need the system that makes us work so hard. Wild nature can show us how to avoid these traps we have made, if we can only give up our blind faith in industrial civilisation. Ultimately, the ideal life would be that beyond even sensible agriculture
