The word "hippie" has an odd stigma attached to it. Of all the stereotypes... which do you defy?

I'll start:

Among other things... I bathe frequently. Daily. I am not dirty.

What fun!

I have not sacrificed my brain to the bong. I defy the stereotype of the stoned, post-verbal couch potato. I am in grad school, study hard, and earn my straight As.

I consider myself a hippie in purely due to that I am into smoking once in a while, enjoy recycling ANYTHING I CAN FIND. Use earth friendly products in my home and dress like a "typical hippy". Other than that, I dont go around passing out daisys or anything...

Stereotype: excessively liberal thinking. If I'd have to choose a political label, Progressive is better.

I have long, shaggy hair, don't bathe as often as I probably should, smoke pot, and listen to the Dead, but as much as I love nature, that much I also love technology, too. I never want to go back to living in the trees, or even the woods, if it means giving up my computer.

I'd say that I dont fit the stereo type visually(except for the long hair), but my ideals are pretty much on the same premises as tree hugging. if i had a choice i would be completely free of this modernized world and live in the woods for the rest of my days.

I don't wear the typical patchy clothing and berkenstocks that are generally associated with the "hippie" stereotype... Also, as a matter of fact, I really don't like tye-dye at all. I try to be creative with the way I look with out falling into any obvious group or cultural category.

I try more to express myself with words and actions than fashions.

I've been told i look like a hippie. I know i'm not. I hold too tightly to my technology. I think my hair makes me look like a stoner, almost no one beleives me when i tell them i don't smoke. they call me a liar.....bastards they are.
If hippy's are naturally inclined towards happiness, i'm definetly out of the running.

I have short, wavy hair. Not long, straight, or blonde. I don't ever wear shades...no, not even purple ones
I don't respect tye-dye, and I don't protest everything I disagree with.
Although, I'm vegan, anti-war, and don't wear shoes where I'm not required. I'm very optimistic, don't wear makeup, and make most of my own clothes. Sad, isn't it?

Well gee-whiz..."peace groovy lovedove, all you freaks, let me lay a stick of sandalwood incense on ya, made it outta my own sandals"firesigne theatre? remember them? I consider myself a hippie, have been since 1967,quit school(10th grade), ran away from home, grew long hair, evaded the draft, was a radical(SDS,etc.),still a radical,IMPEACH THE RESIDENT!!!, still own and drive VW buses(4-sale,2 running 64 and 66 vans, and others for parts)was a dead head/acid head/freak, hitched across the usa about 3 0r 4 times and have lived on both coasts, lived in communes in Kansas City, finally setting down roots here in southern oregon, back to the land movement, built some cabins, and my son was born in one, homebirth, which to me is still FAR OUT/OUTTA SITE...started planting trees, as part of the environmental movement, which lead to 25 years of woodswork, now live on 40 acres in the mtns., around the valley here is a community of older HIPPIES, communes, community, etc...grow some of our own...food/etc(puff,puff,...yeah). Hippie to me was "do your own thing" and so I maybe part of a group, but I'm still my own HIPPIE?YIPPIE? YEAH...Remember underground comixs? those FABULOUS FURRY FREAK BROTHERS? my idols...PEACE,rc

I am against the "war on terrorism", listen to the Dead, i recycle and I pick up trash, i am a vegetarian, and i try to use only cruelty free products. I am going to school for nursing, and i plan to use it to go through the peace corps or something to help third world countries. My only vice is that i like to bathe often, and i like to go shop for clothes. I think it is refreshing to see how you all have the same sort of mind frame, but strikingly different habits. If we were all made the same, how fun would life be?

i am always tagged as being a hippie -- not much of a corporate type - i recycle and re-use, get clothes from the free box, volunteer, do what I can to make the world a better place for the children. was at the 1st woodstock, been on both coasts and overseas, back and forth and back, picked up a college degree, never got permanently whacked on weed-- pretty natural no makeup - actually never saw the dead - was on the east coast then hawaii when that was all going on ... but i do wear wire rims and have have a VW bus thats been back and forth across the ocean and up and down the w coast... so i guess i'm guilty, as charged...

It is the MaryJane that I do not follow. My entire family, from siblings to my father, are stoners, or were at one time. I've never inhaled, and don't suppose I ever will. Find your own path, don't follow someone elses...

some hippie things about me, some stereotypes, some not:

i hardly ever wear underwear and bras.
i hate hate, i'm all about war protests and promoting peace because that's what this world needs more of.
i eat some meat, just not cows.
i am freespirited and spontaneous, i'm just out to have a good time while i'm here, but on some days i can be a BITCH.
i like pottttt.

when people find out that im a hippie, and that i like bob marley, they automatically think im a stoner. now i do admit i have smoked a couple of times, but i just do it on special occasions. but i like being labeled as a hippie im proud of who i am. when i premote peace, or take off my shoes, or even tell someone what they are doing to the trees and animals is wrong, i like it! (although i do want to move to garberville california, my mom thinks im gonna be a beach bum pot head,) but whatever, i just kind of shrug those people off!

darlin... you shouldnt have to label yourself or be proud that your a "hippie" just be happy and proud of the person you are and how you see life and view things differently then others. Labeling is not a cool thing, its just like judging and i dont think you'd be one to judge! Be true to yourself and never try and being anything that your not.

peace and lovin'

i'm the happiest mama in the world! i jump in the mud, dance in the rain, walk around barefoot, make my own cloths, smoke toooooo much nugget, give strangers hugs, sing to myself, worship bob marley, have tattoos, love to draw and write, and will help anyone who is in need...
i also pay my own bills, have a wonderful house, travel a lot, manage a national known business, shave my legs, shower daily (sometimes twice even!), i don't eat red meat, got short spikey hair, and love being me!
i go with the flow... dance thru life... laugh at myself... and i am the most responsible person i know.
"nothing left to do but smile smile smile"
... oh yeah, and i also quote the dead!

Stereotyping.. not cool. But everyone's guilty of it.
I'm a single mom who also plays in the mud, jumps in puddles, makes my own clothes, obeys no rules and makes no rules, has fun, eats no meat, loves freedom and peace, protects animal rights, use all natural product.. only all natural, smokes the dope, rolls in the grass, laughs and tries to wear shoes as little as possible..
BUUUUUUT... I also will, when forced to wear shoes, make them high heeled designer shoes with no cost too high, I shop the malls, wear makeup, spend hours on my hair, go to "socialite" parties, attend college and make the grade and detest tie-dye. The only thing that I absolutely hold truer then anything else in my love is from my true obsession and love, John Lennon.. "All you need is love.." ain't that the truth...

I don't really know what I am, so I guess that makes me hippie-like. I prefer to be Jesus-like, although I've been so self absorbed in my own responsiblities, I'm not really being Jesus-like or Hippie-like. I live in a one bedroom, by myself, I have a tye die tapestry hanging on the wall. I enjoy candles, incense, classical music and love being surrounded by books. I like bing called Bohemian, but not really hippie. I am more of a bum community college student. I gave up the classic hippie stereotype a while ago. I don't wear hemp, or make my own clothes, I don't have dreads or even smoke bud. But, I am more open that most people and very very sensitive to what happens in the world. I have idealism about freedom and human rights and environmentalism. But I don't fit into any narrow field. How can anyone really? If I shave, I shave, if I shower, I shower.. But more importantly, I think and I feel. I work hard for my own personal developement and am still searching for enlightenment. Like many bum college students or hippies or bohemians. So, I defy the common sterotype and am defining a new image. Myself. But, alas, I am tired now. I wish I knew all of you personally. How long can we all email each other? Wildflower? Ladybug? Where are any meeting grounds for us all. Summer is on the horizon you know.

I like what you say Lady Raven -- "I defy the common sterotype and am defining a new image. Myself." Me, too.

Summer is, yes, blissfully just around the bend. Sometimes, I visit my aunt in Michigan during the summer. She lives in Connecticut but goes to South Haven during July and August. It would be really nice to meet up with you somewhere around there, but travel all depends on what kind of summer work I get and how much free time it leaves me.

peace,

South Haven is only about two and a half hours southwest of where I am. Beautiful summer town, but mostly just like every Michigan town on the west coast(meaning Lake Michigan). If you ever come around here let me know, I would love to hang out.

label me all you want, but I dont have enough room on my body for all the labels I would have to wear. hippie, cyberpunk, youth of the esoteric generation, psyconaut, open minded free thinking liberal, poet, artist, philosopher, macguyver fix it guy, lover, rainbow, phamily, free spirit, cognitive dissident, hacker (retired), phreak, musician, code poet, juggler, politically incorrect, punk, ex pothead, zen junkie, astral traveler, laid back, shit I could lable myself all day, but the labels dont define who I am, they merely attempt to homogonize my existence into prepackaged categories. I am a human being, everything else is just gravy.

How do I defy the stereotype? HHhhmmm..... Well, the big one is I bathe regularly (although I do hate taking showers/baths... I hate drying my hair). I do wear make up sometimes (when I feel the need for it, or when I'm visiting my mom who never lets me hear the end of it )I eat meat, veggies, and junk food. I'm not really an environmental freak, but I do recycle occasionally. And, my hair grows very fast so it is usually very long, but every two years I cut it super-short. Unfortuantly I kind of do fit the stereotype because I love the GD, have their stickers all over my car and I have an unhealthy obsession with patchy clothes. But that's all the wonderful things about me that make me me.
