I've posted a few times on here before and everyone just seemed so nice...I haven't been back for a while because college started and its been so busy. But if all you nice people are still there please respond to what I'm about to say. I feel so stuck here in college. I love nature, I love wandering. I never wanted to go to college but thats the thing that everyone "does" and my parents wanted me to do it too also I have a fiancee who is alot more conservative than I am and wants to be a lawyer so he is here and I don't want to leave him...plus I have no money. But I really feel so stuck in these dorm rooms full of all these people who look the same and give me dirty looks when they hear my greatful dead music and tell me to turn it down. I made recycling bins for the hall because no one bothered to take thier trash downstairs, but they don't even sort it when its clearly marked. And last night they just stuck the boxes together. What I really want to do is just leave and drive around and camp and work for the money I need for each meal. Plus I've heard about alot of hippie compounds where everyone works together. The thought is so appealing. Here's the other thing: I am a Christian and alot of my Christian friends thinks that the music I listen to and the clothes I wear are contradictory to my faith and that living at one of those places would be also. But I can't see how caring about the environment and expressing myself and wanting to be around people who express themselves similarly is wrong. Do I need to be in school? Should I stay because of me? Should I stay because of my fiancee? Should I just do what I feel? Someone tell me please!

Hi,

I'm sorry to hear about your predicament!

Why don't you visit www.twinoaks.org

It sounds like what you're looking for. Perhaps you could set up a three week visit during your christmas break.

I've always found this place to be very interesting. I'd love to live there if I weren't tied to my daughter and husband (who I doubt would want to live there.)

I understand your situation completely. My advice? Stay in school. Get everything you can from the system while you can, try to deal with the people who try to drag you down. That way when you turn around and say "Fuck the System" you'll have the ability to say you've been there, done that, and know something about what you're saying so people can't just say you're another loser. Not that not going to school makes you a loser, but if you don't, you had better have some way of making your life worthwhile, and if you care about other people then it has to appear worthwhile to them, too.

Four years of unpleasant school in the larger view isn't much, especially when you consider the leverage it gives you to 'work' society to suit you. And, it's not like you can ever learn to much...

As for people who disagree with your way of life, you can either keep working to try to change them, or you can simply deal with it and realize they're the sheep, it's their problem not yours.

I agree with toman. An education is never a bad idea. Learning something (anything) has always been a good thing. I understand your situation, and it sucks, I know. I think you should try to stick it out and try to make it work at school. But a bad experience at one shcool doesn't mean that it is like that everywhere. Take some time to look around at other schools if you can. You might find that you fit in best at another school. Just remember that you don't have to rush school. But don't just drop the education advantage alltogether! Hope this helps ya some!

If I had stumbled across your post a few years ago, I would have agreed with the others here and told you to stay in school. I went to college and am now in graduate school, and frankly, I loved my education.

But, college isn't designed for everyone, nor should it be.

Some people do not enjoy school. What you said in your original post was that you "never wanted to go to college" but felt pressured to apply yourself to the norm. If you do not go to college, now or ever, you are no less a person than someone who does attend. You are not necessarily less knowledgable either. You are certainly not less intelligent. If you have another way to college wisdom, run with it!

Here's my advice to you, the world has a lot of opportunity to offer. If you do not want to be in a classroom, do not allow your brain to collect dust there. Follow your bliss.

you know, Its not learning you obtain in college, its a degree, the rest is all just submitting to the bullshit system of the man, and doing everything the way everyone else wants it. its an extension of the public education we all endured and its another institution of conformity 101, its an "education" and some people love it because its so much easier than learning, its all beaten into your brain like you cant learn for yourself. I try to keep the two seperate as mark twain said "I try not to let education interfere with my learning"

stick it out and get the piece of paper that babylon wants, then you can stick it to the man and name your price.

I know how you feel. I'm working and going to college right now in a huge city, and I would love nothing more than to bail out and go travel and live and live a nice peaceful life out in nature, but- I have to finish school. For me it's just something I want to do for my self so I know I accomplished it. After i graduate I'm planning on going into the peace corp, then I'll figure out if I want to go to grad school, start working, or just see where my path takes me. My advise: finish school, then venture out to new adventures. If you're at a big school, see if there is some kind of environmental club or something you could do. And forget about those other girls in the dorm! Did you just start going to college?

Your dormmates sound like idiots. Anyway, good for you for trying to make a difference! Let me just say, I gave up the *typical* college education. I hated most kids my own age, and I just couldn't imagine living with a bunch more kids that I figured I wouldn't like. Now, I wish I had taken the opportunity, because I gave up a lot of possible adventures out there! I missed out on a lot of things, I am sure. Now, I am not going to tell you to stick it out. That's up to you. But try to look at this as a great opportunity. You could maybe even have a chance to study abroad. Imagine! As far as Christianity goes, if you feel comfortable with your personal choices, don't listen to what your friends have to say. They are probably just afraid of anything *different*.
