I had a friend who had horrible cramps. Every month they sent her straight to bed with pain so awful she said it would cause her to throw up and double over. She would drink chamomile tea and then her doctor suggested calcium supplements. How much? She didn't say. But once she started the calcium, no more cramps! Good luck! |

Calcium can help, also look in to black cohosh, cramp bark, or monks caste berry. All of these work, do a little research. [This message has been edited by herbmama (edited 11-17-102).] |

I also used to get bad period pain. What does really help is ginger. It doesnt matter how you take it, i have ginger tablets and also ginger tea. But if you like ginger you could also have the real thing. Ginger helps with all sorts of stomach sicknesses and is also reccomended for travel sickness and morning sickness. You can fing ginger tablets and tea at supermarkets or health stores. |

Ginger can actually cause "morning sickness", and genreally should be avoided during the first trimester, as it can cause miscarrige in women with high risk pregnancies.Ginger tea was on of the first things that clued me into my own pregnancy. I tried to drink a cup before I knew I was pregnant and it made me want to hurl! Normally I love it. ------------------ Some say Om others say Shalome but we all call Mama Earth our home resect her protect her now rise up rise up rise up people of the earth tribe rise UNNITE |

Also you can get Clary Sage oil - mix a few drops with lotion and rub on your tummy. It's a natural muscle relaxant. |

You could also try motherwort tea to ease the cramping. Cammomile is also a natural relaxant. Blue cohosh will help regulate your periods. I make motherwort and raspberry tea for my moon. One other thing you might want to pay attention to is what you are using for your blood. Regular tampons can cause cramping depending on which chemicals are used in the bleaching process or if they are the wrong size. I use the Keeper, which is a small natural gum rubber cup that works like a tampon. It collects the blood and can be emptied, cleansed and reused. Many women have reported improvement from using it instead of tampons. Plus you save a lot of money because you are not purchasing pads or tampons. You can read about it at www.keeper.com. I hope this info. helps you out! Peace. |

Sarasita,I've been thinking about getting a keeper for years now, but I'm afraid of making the investment only to find out I don't like it. So how do you like yours? Did you have any trouble adjusting to it or learning to use it? |

I got mine last summer and at first it was a little akward (sp?) because in order to insert it you flatten it and then fold it. You have to pinch it folded and slide it inside without letting it open up again too soon. I got the hang of it after a couple of months. I think it is definitely worth it because of the benefits it has for your body (no chemicals, tearing, no toxic shock!) and saves a lot of money over time while putting less litter into the environment. I also realized it put me more in touch with my blood and my body's changes (travelling around Costa Rica after I quit taking The Pill after four years~ hurrah!). Good luck! Love and Peace, Sara |

WiccChick,Before you cure your cramps, are you certain they aren't indicative of a larger problem? Though some cramping during your period is completely normal... it shouldn't keep you bed ridden. Hmmm... How is your diet? Do you have a lot of chemicals going into your body? I read a study that showed most cultures of people who live naturally (especially the few hunter/gatherer societies that still exist) have no knowledge of discomfort during their period, nor do they have any symptoms of pms. Not only do they not experience these things, but they were mortified to learn that other people do. Western Culture apparantly has the greatest market for menstral aid and "experts" attribute this to our diets high in processed food. Also- about tampons- did you know that the first ingredient in most tampons is rayon. Companies use it because it causes us to bleed more and if we bleed more, we buy more. Terrible, isn't it? |

I suffered from horrible cramps a few years ago. I would be bed-ridden for two to three days a month. My doctor prescribed birth control pills and they have worked great but i hope to find an alternative soon. I don't really like the idea of all those chemicals in my body. Anyways, i know a girl that started taking evening primrose oil daily and it helped make her period a lot less painful. |

Another thing about Dandilions is they help with the awful water retention bloating! And is a natural dieretic/ fluid balancer. Also try some yoga or pilates to help ease the pain. I know ur thinking exercise? that'll make it worse! But actually, the relaxation of the musceles works wonders.... lie on your stomach, and grap your feet and rock gently back and forth. its peace with the cramps!dana |

From Sabbath-Hawk:I heard masterbation helps. I haven't researched the subject but hey what can it hurt =)Actually medicine backs you up to a degree. Cramps can be explained as a muscle (the uterus) complaining about infrequent exercise (the spasms that expelle uterian lining). Since orgasm causes the uterus to contract this could lessen or eleviate the discomfort the muscle by more frequently exercising the muscle, i.e. the uterus.<Shrug> it could work |

Yoga definately does help. Do not do any inverted poses though. I have done herbal tea and warm baths with Bronner's peppermint soap. That always works. For what its worth, masturbation and sex does help alleviate pain. |

Hi everyone. I think there were a lot of good suggestions up there. I take red raspberry tea and a hot bath for cramps but I probalby don't get them as bad as you do. I have a friend who is sometimes bedridden with them as well. When you make herbal tea you need to steep it for 10-20 minutes to get the full properties. I've also heard that eating soy products are helpful. They seem to help me. I think this website is the most informative on the subject and it's advice is all natural too. http://www.menstruation.com.au/index.html I don't have the Keeper but I do have the Diva Cup. It's vitrually the same except it's made out of silicone instead of latex or rubber (I don't remember which they use). I really like it. It is ackward to put in at first. I've told some of my girlfriends about it but them are kind of squeemish about their own blood. Go figure. The Diva Cup gives a money back guarantee if you don't like it. I think it's worth investing in you can always return it if you don't like it. Saje |
