Just wondering 'cause no one's been posting much here lately and I LOVE to cook and talk about food. I just got a baking stone and have been going crazy making herb breads and pizza all week -- best toppings so far: #1) sauteed zucchini with fresh tomatoes, garlic, basil, and goat cheese #2) mushrooms, onions, and gorgonzolla (no tomato sauce on either). Any unusual favorite toppings? Any vegan possibilities?Keep on cooking... |

I'm leery of vegan cheeses because of the "natural" flavoring factor (see my other post), but I'll look again and see if there's anything without such additives. I think I need to come up with a pizza-minus-cheese/chees substitute. Any ideas? |

There's a great recipe in "The Farm Cookbook" for a vegan "cheese" made from Nutrional Yeast. It's great on Pizza. "The Farm Cookbook" is real a must have for any vegan. |

i just wanted to second your comment on the Farm cookbook, its kind of like a vegan bible. There are all kinds of helpful info, and some wonderful recipies. My mama gave me her copy that she has had since her "hippie" days, and it was one of the best gifts I have gotten. |

Thanks, herbmama. I have that book, but it's buried in a pile somewhere, and I had forgotten about that recipe. |

I think that tofutti is the only really good vegan cheese.. it actually gets kinda melty.. but i think vegan pizzas are more fun without that stuff.. i love pesto on a crust that has some cornmeal in it.. with zucchinis and forest mushrooms. oor.. you can make this really really good vegan alfredo sauce with: pine nuts and a few soaked macadamia nuts , roasted garlic, oil, umeboshi plum vinegar, and salt. sounds wierd but its sooooo good.. so that sauce is great with asparagus and sundried tomatoes on pizza.. and i love winter squash on pizza too.. |

I found some good vegan recipes for "cheese" on vegsource.com.I've also tried some home-made "cheese". It was white and creamy and good, but not sturdy like a chunk of cheese. If you like, do a web search for "vega cheese recipes" and see all the options that pop up. It's a lot to choose from. If you try one and you like it, post it here for all to see. I like the "Follow YOur Heart" brand of vegan cheese. At first I thought it had a weird consistency to it. But afterwards the flavor is incredible. I made some delicious quesadillas that really hit the spot. It gave me a good feeling knowing no innocent animal was harmed, just so that I'd have some tasty ingredients for my meal. |
