Just wondering, because I think a lot of people have certain feelings or thoughts that would be considered racist, but because the term has taken on such a negative meaning, they might hesitate to admit it. I know I think of some things in ways that a lot of people would consider racist, so maybe I am. I don't really have a problem with it though, because it seems rational to me and I'm always reconsidering things instead of ridgedly adhering to one school of though on any given subject. It also seems to me that not objectively considering potentially offensive ideas is just ignorant, and judging people on beliefs you don't agree with makes you no better then they. To be truly open minded, doesn't one have to consider all ideas and thoughts, even those we've been taught are wrong offensive?

I can't admit to any racism, not that I am aware of, anyway. I can admit to some ageism and some sexism.

As a woman, walking in the city alone, I have to make many snap judgements on what's "safe" and what's "dangerous".

My "DANGER" flag goes up every time I see a group of youngish males hanging around together, basically acting in a way that arouses my suspicion.

It doesn't matter if they are black, white, hispanic, Indian, or Asian. Just the youngish male thing does it for me. It's not even a matter of how they are dressed. It's more the way they are ACTING. Are they sizing everybody up? Do they have scowls on their faces?

Men in suits can be just as violent as men in hiphop clothes.

My apologies go to those youngish males on this forum this may have insulted. ;)

Yeah, i was racist against Mexicans when I lived in California, but (this was when i was 11 or so), my babysitter talked to me about it, and then I became friends with Beatriz, who was Mexican...And it went away :) very happy about that.
I'm not ashamed to admit that i was at one point, I'm glad I was open-minded enough to realize that and fix it!!
PEACE
and good luck to those of you who are working on those feelings :D

I find racism funny.
Not in the fact that you are showing hatered to everyone of your opposite being. It's more of the slag and stereotypes. Let's take old cartoons (bugs bunny, popeye, etc.) that used racism/stereotypes with the facial exagerations and racist/stereotypical acting. It's funny to me just to show the ignorance of other cultures. Yes the "mammy" and "big chief" bits are hilarious! It's better to always laugh at ourselves.

The names are funny aswell: Honky, Pale Face, Nigger, Jiggaboo, Yellow, Chink, etc. I mean even the slang terms for these cultures are funny as shit! It's the images that congures in my mind I find funny aswell.

I'm a mix breed like just about everyone on the Earth. I'm Irish and Native American. Think of me a a pale faced big chief. I love the Irish and the Native sides of me. Hell I even laugh at the "Irish Cop" or "Irish Drunk" or "Chief running Nose" and "HOW!" stuff.

So that part of racism I don't have a problem with.. per se'. I mean I do like how in cartoons today, you see all children and adults get along with each other. That's positive. Getting rid of the old racist cartoons from the past is stupid.

that 'cracker' is about the funniest way to describe a white person.
i dunno though.... robins are birds, and sparrows are birds, but you dont see them mating and making mixed bird babies.
but in the end, we are all just people trying to find our way through this f'ed up life. so a little love for each other might go a long way.

Do you think that anyone who is educated can be racist?

I definately have prejudices. I am prejudiced against racists and bigots, for example.

Like Treehugger, I'm also sexist in the same manner. But is that sexism? I was taught that in order to really execute an "ism" than you have to be in the position of power, berating or threatening the person who is not. We live in a world of binary oppositions. There's little that is actually, socially equal. That's why the word "nigger" is offensive and the word "cracker" is funny. Anyone with any historical memory knows what whites have done to blacks in America, and so whites have this position of power. White people perpetuate and accept their white privilege thoughtlessly. Some even deny that there is such a thing, because when you have always had the upper hand, you can not understand that you are priviledged. The person with less power can not take power from the other person by using what given the other person power against them. So, a black person can't do as much harm to a white person by targeting just the color of his skin as the white person can do to the black person by doing the same.

Another example of this can be seen in sexism. Men have more social power than women do. No one really calls a woman a dick. It's an insult that's pretty much exclusively reserved for other men. Men's anatomy isn't used against women, where, the most offensive word in the english language is "cunt." For a man to be called a "pussy" or a "douche" is superiorly insulting... or worse, for men to be called a "faggot" is really an insinuation that he is feminine.

When a woman is raped, people wonder why she was being so sexy or why she wasn't being more careful. It's a popular defense.

So, when I pass a large group of men at night, I put my keys between my fingers so no one will ever wonder why I wasn't more careful when I'm sitting in a courtroom.

I might be sexist. Idunno. When women have the same rights as men in America, I'll think about calling that sexism.

I am Native American and European.Growing up it was real obvious my mom was Indian...The long black hair and tan skin.We lived near the beach and she was beautiful as a copper vessel. Then my father got a really good job so we moved uptown and faraway from the tribe. We lived in one of the best neighborhoods in the region at the time.My mom wanted to work. So she applied at a bank on the main drag of the town. I remember her telling me that she lied and said she was Italian because she knew no bank in that town would hire an Indian. When we were little Mom would scrub us spotless and our manners had to be well above average before we'd go anywhere. Mom was always afraid the state could take me and my brother who looked very white.
I find no elements of racism funny because I had to heal from Internalized Racism. It almost destroyed my world..In my young :bawl: teens I tried hanging with skinheads to fit in with whites. Broke my moms heart and so I quit that. But I will never forget the horrifying idiocy of some... :(

I will restate what I said. I don't find racism cool in any stance, I find the old views funny because it really shows the ignorance that is around us. A reminder if you will.

I know what's it's like to be treated. I've been through it my whole life.

Hey Unkle John,

Meaning absolutely NO disrespect, but how is ignorance funny when it has such detrimental consequences for so many undeserving people? I think I catch your drift, but I wonder if "funny" is an appropriate word choice.

I dont pick out any certain group or race to judge or dislike, there are many qualities in an individual person that I can not stand but I am not them and never will be, BUT when I see someone litter I judge them like they could never be a decent person or something, when I see someone screaming at the top of there lungs at there children in the middle of a store, when they could leave, talk to there kid like a normal person and then continue shopping if the child is up for normal behavior, ya I guess I judge and dont like what I see, but what gets me through each day I see those insane people is I will never ever be like that!!!
or people who smoke with there kids in the car, windows up I want to freak on them, but I cant... so many things I see all kinds, colors, sex's of people doing everyday that is so bothersome to me and I feel like there is nothing I can do, exept be thankfull that everyone is not like them, they are walmart people!! oh thats judging ;)

honestly I cant believe in the year 2005 that people can still be racists like black and white racist, get over it there are so many other things to worrie about other then color, its way past time to move on.

this might JUST be me, but is anyone here kind of biased AGAINST their own race? (in my case, caucasion) I really can't stand what white people have done in the past, it makes me sick and mad and ashamed to be part of the race.
I don't know if that's good or bad or anything, i was just wondering if anybody has ever felt that way?
and Unkle_John, you meant funny in the way that it's interesting and sad/weird right? because i would have used that word too.
PEACE :D

I felt the same kind of woes as you did at one point, but then I realized that I am not representive of my race. All of the things that whites have done in the past, I feel, are things that I would never do. Therefore, I feel like I am not bound to my race's concience. I do laugh at some jokes that could be construed as "racy", but not racist. And besides, it's Comedy Central, so they have to make sure they don't cross the line anyway.

I don't really believe in races, I know folks start looking different from each other the more distance there is between them, then sometimes not, and so they might just talk different. I find people different from me to be interesting, fascinating and I want to know them. How they live, what their music is like, their food, their humor. I really believe that if you really really take the time to get to know someone, you can find plenty of of things to dislike about them other then the color of their skin. ;)

I am a person of mixed race and majority of my friends are the same. My opinions about a person is based on personality and things they have done.

I admit to having dislike for foreigners who disrespect the women of my country and act as if their race is more superior because they carry more money than most Filipinos. I have been witness to an American who announced that all Filipinos are wannabe Americans but all they are is a group of prostitutes willing to do anything for a few American dollars. I also admit to beating up an American.
