This sufficiently disgusts me I can't stand my school! Ugh. So I go to this Catholic school which coincidentally is thought by many to be the portal of "hell" but to the point of this post ~ The freshmen biology class are doing a fetal pig disection a FETAL pig! This is the school that led the Pro-Choice "Right to Life March" to "defend the unborn" but they have NO problem slicing up the fetal pigs! When I went to Father Kevin and asked how they justify this he simply told me that god intended humans to be ultimatley "superior" to animals so that makes it ok for them to disect fetal pigs. Hypocrytical and Compleatly Callously DiSGUSTiNG, awesome.
Sorry for the anger, but well, I'm angry.
What do you think of this craziness?

I don't really have a problem with it. I think we all are aware of Christian hypocrisy. What exactly is the source of these pigs; Are they aborted intentionally?

It IS pretty hypocritical. There's a lot that's pretty hypocritical in the Catholic religion.

I remember reading a while back... well, okay, decades ago now :o about a girl who fought the school district...she didn't want to dissect animals because she felt it perpetuated cruelty to animals.

You could raise a stink about it.. maybe they'd bow in and let you work on a computer model...I believe that's what they did for the girl I'm remembering.

You could raise the point that even though humans are inherently "superior" to animals doesn't mean we have the right to abuse that power.

i think that is horrible inhumane especially because it is the freshman class which means it is a class that is required to graduate you can totally refuse to do it they can't make you especially if your against animal cruilty

Well catholics believe that animals don't have a soul.... so they aren't the same as people....

actually the whole idea of science should be against their religion... after all biology is the study of life and in all my biological studies I have not read anywhere that the earth and human beings all started at the garden of eden. The whole idea of evolution is contrary to what the church believes. we evolved from animals..... but yet they have no soul.... so do we have a soul? How are we so arrogant to say we're not animals? If you cut a fetal pig open and a human open are there no heart, lungs, kidenys, blood vessels, tendons, muscles in both?

that's why the catholic religion is flawed (every religion has their flaw) so that's why you don't buy into the hoopla of that crap and just believe in being a good person and treating other people well... I think god likes that....

We had to disect a fetal pig at my high school and there were people that refused to do it... I think they either got to look at some one elses disection or they had another project for them.... they automatically got dropped to a C for the lab.... which is shitty but better than an F

I am so glad I am not a Catholic any longer. A side note here...if Catholics believe that animals don't have souls then why do they have those masses where they bless (or whatever) people's pets? I had to dissect a fetal pig in Anatomy and Physiology II. It was sad, but interesting. I am not real sure where they get those poor baby pigs, tho.

"Animals seem to lack a self-awareness that some people think soul delivers to us.

We know that we exist--we know that we have a loving God because the Holy Spirit reveals this to our very soul.

An animal doesn't know that he knows anything--let alone, being able to know God. He has no soul."

That is the belief of Catholics....

This is also an old belief. See the thing with catholics they only like to believe the flavor of the year or century or what not.... They have a dogma... which is that the catholic religion believes whatever the church officials deems true.... now the word of man is fallible... but the church doesn't think so. So things with that religion change from time to type depending on who's in power of the bureaucracy. Hierarchial bullshit!

Of course now that people aren't killing animals for food.... the church now feels in order to please the people they need to say that ahhh.... animals do have souls.... we don't have to kill indiscriminately any more... you know to save themselves from people thinking that they aren't friendly to animals.... after all they are the church...

I'd like to point out that not all catholics are evil. I mean, technically, I am a catholic. (Actually, I was probably just excommunicated for not capitalizing Catholic)

I bet pigs are exempt from having souls, in the church's opinion, because they split at the hoof.

Just kidding, I think that is incredibly hypocritical. But you have to understand, that might be what they believe, and if that's so, the administration has the right to do what they want (if it's a private school). It may be morally wrong ( and I do feel it's especially wrong to mark somebody down for what they believe in ), but it's their right - no matter how ill-used it is.

Hang on, hang on... We need to know if these pigs were intentionally aborted for use in schools, or whether they're just leftovers that would be ground up and fed to livestock anyway. Either way, I'm not really clear on the the issue here, aside from the religious aspect. I thought most of us were pro-abortion; does that only apply to humans? Or is the issue the disection? Should we not disect anything, but rather live in the dark ages where it's illegal to study cadavers? Is this just an emotional issue about cutting up cute little piggies that were ripped mewling from their mother's wombs? I'm confused...

Nah, Toman, I think we're just anti-hypocrisy. It's the IRONY...that the same people who are touting Life above all else...to the extent of being against stem cell research...are dissecting fetuses. Even if it IS fetal pigs. It's pretty ironic, isn't it?

Yes, pigs and humans have bits and pieces in common, medically speaking, even though there are anatomic differences, such as in the thyroid glands...well, anyway.

Hey, I WAS a Catholic school girl. ;)

There's nothing wrong with catholics..... MOST people that practice catholicism are pretty normal.... but usually it's the church who is currupt... not it's people
