I just recently became aware of a ban on raw milk in Ohio, where I live. What do you guys think? I prefer milk in it's natural (though chilled) state. In fact, I don't drink milk that you get in stores. I don't like the flavour. I use it for cooking and that's about it. I think the best part of milk is the cream, if it isn't homogenized.

Why did they ban it?

Hmmm. I wonder what the deal is with that here. I've never seen raw milk for sale anywhere, but I hear you can buy it right from the source if you live out in the sticks someplace. Are they trying to ban it alltogether where you are? Or just in stores? I can see the sale being controlled in public stores and whatnot, because it'd be difficult to insure quality and safety, or at least a lot more expensive.

These are just my thoughts, so I don't know how far off I am...

Back in the good ol' days, people used to drink (and otherwise consume) raw milk, meaning that the milk hasn't been pasteurized or homogenized. Well, as our country's population expanded, and the need for MORE, MORE, MORE expanded, there was consumer demand that small dairy farms (as well as any type of small farm) could no longer satisfy. So, the need for producing lots of milk and then needing to ship it further and further away called for ways to ensure the stability of the product. Thus the processes of homogenizing and pasteurizing enters the picture. For our safety. I don't know. I do know that I enjoy the taste of real, unf*cked with milk. Very rich. I guess I don't have to worry too much myself, as I can run down the road to Nature's Nook, a Natural Foods shop in Richmond, IN and get Trader's Point Organic Milk. It has been pasteurized, but it is still better than that watery junk in a plastic jug that they call milk that is sold in WalMart and Kroger's and the like. But, it seems it would be a good idea, and would support smaller farms if the "government" would figure out the best ways to allow the sale of raw milk. Apparently, they do have guidelines, but no one in the state qualifies at this time.

The obvious answer is to simply get your own cow. You'll have all the milk you and your friends can drink.

I heard an article about natural milk on NPR. I guess some people, in order to circumvent the law in Ohio, have begun selling shares of cows to people. Its illegal to sell the milk, but if one owns, say, one-quarter share in a cow, they can do what they want with the milk that cow produces.

I think it's pretty sneaky and cool.

I have my own milk goat and me and my family drink her milk. I do not pasturize or homoginized it. Pasturization, named from the man who invented it, Louis Pasture, is suppose to kill some of the bacteria found in milk. Un-pasturized milk has more vitamins in it and helps the human body build up extra immunities. I have NEVER been sick, nor has anyone in my family from drinking raw milk. Raw milk is the only way to go for me! I make my own butter and whip cream and it is the tastiest in town!

Raw milk isnt going to make you sick, people just say that to scare you. None of the bologny you read about bacteria and diseases in raw milk is true. Find a local farmer and buy your milk from them! Offer to do some chores around the farm in exchange for fresh milk. I use to before I got my goat.

i grew up drinking raw milk. from a cow that i had to milk twice a day (yay for farms :( ) i never got sick. when the cow died (after about 10 years), i refused to keep having to get up at the buttcrack of dawn. so my grandparents started buying milk from the store. it tastes, and smells like it is sour. it is nasty. i was never sick. neither was anyone else in my family untill we started buying more adn more stuff from the store.

Many natural food stores sell unpastureized milk, I used to buy it all the time from whole foods, I believe that it came from royal crest dairy or some such place. I guess you just have to know where to look... :o
