Two different people were telling me you could get the same effect as marijuana from smoking banana parts... One said the leaf, the other said the peel. Is there any truth to it? Seems weird to me.

There are a lot of thinks out there you can smoke that will have some effect or another, but none of them is going to be close to marijuana. I'v eheard of smoking bananna peels, orange peels and any number of other things; I think if these had any value at all we would know about it by now. I mean I see salvia on the broadcast news every so often now, if these every-day things were smokeable, I'm sure they'd be quick to exploit them.

Bannanadine - a good joke (http://www.erowid.org/psychoactives/humor/humor_bannanadine1.shtml)

It's a joke, myth, urban legend. The closest thing to a cannabis-like high from something you can get at the grocery store is Nutmeg (http://www.erowid.org/plants/nutmeg/nutmeg.shtml), but beware, it's not very good for you (mrysticin and safrole) and you need a lot (5 to 20 grams steeped in water [a tea])... Nausea is pretty common with it, and it plays hell with your system. Supposedly, it's what Malcom X used to get high on in prison... Meh. Not my cup of tea, pun intended.

Another cannabis-like substance is Kava (http://www.erowid.org/plants/kava/kava.shtml), a member of the pepper family, which is a bit like being on alcohol, cannabis, and cocaine all at once. A lot better for you than nutmeg, in my opinion, but potentially physically addictive (like nicotine, caffeine, cocaine, et al), so be careful.

Ok, I thought it sounded kinda weird to smoke banana peels. Thanks for the information.

I'll probably stay away from the nutmeg and stick with weed :) But if I wanted to try the Kava (which I'm not too sure of because of the potential addiction you talked about) how would I do that? Smoke it, eat it, use the drink talked about at that website? Can I find it in a grocery store? The site kind of confused me on whether Kava is a plant or a drink, lol.

Hi Sparky, we havent met, yet! Two close friends of mine went to the Bahamas last year. On the way to the airport, their taxi driver pointed to a banana plant and said that you could dry the leaves, smoke them and get high. This past year the same people went to Jamaica. They have such a cool story to tell. Instead of going on the "official bus tour to Ziggy Marley's house" my friends found a "taxi".This taxi driver took them all over.Places you wouldnt get to see on the "bus tour". Diamond was their guides name. He took them to the village where he grew up.....cool stuff... long story short. My friends told Diamond of what they heard in the Bahamas about banana leaves and they asked him if it was true. They said he started belly laughing..... telling them yes it was true but in Jamaica you have to be poorer than dirt before you resort to smoking banana leaves!

I think if bananas got you high (or any other fruit) it would be illegal by now

I remember reading that in the Anarchist's Cookbook once (I read it a long time ago, a friend had a copy) . I think that it says to scrape the membrane from the inside the peel, dry it out, and you can smoke it to get high. I personally never have tried it.

Goodness you're dense. Bannanadine is fake. Nutmeg, due to mrysticine and saffrole, is real. Please don't spread misinformation here, and please take the time to read the entire thread.
