Perpetual Motion

Whirring
Throbbing
Vibrating
the whole room
it envelopes me
humming
windy
vaccum
gotta hold onto your hat

positive pressures
gurgling
hissing
searing heat
feels like the sun on a hot day
oop the valve is dripping
gotta fix that packing

lights flickering
thundering
not a storm mind you
the buildings heartbeat
its digestive system
it burps out heat

a motor starts
it screams and howls
and shakes the room
gotta replace those bearings

a phone call
urgency
a fan has gone on strike
what does it want?

race to the room
pneumatics are malfunctioning
room is silent
this ain't good

race to the panel
circuit boards
blinking lights
pressure gauges
telecommunications lines
electropneumatic transducers
five years ago i didn't know what that was

transducer has no pressure on it
badbadbad

elevators quit working
the building is in distress
a silent coma
it cannot breathe
annie, annie, are you okay?

rush to the air compressor
it's quit no wonder the building's down

people trapped in the elevator
frantic phone calls
sense of urgency
fire department comes

air compressor belt broke

amazing
simple fix

gauges build pressure
motors whine to a start
vibration
elevators move
ductwork puffs out
it makes a popping noise
doors slam open
or shut
i wipe the sweat off my brow
fire department leaves

this is how god feels i bet
so important
