i have an issue with people chooping down trees for 2 weeks during xmas time, decorating them all nice and then throwing them out in the trash when they are done. I'm also not sure what to think of fake trees - I suppose they are better than deforestation in the short term but I dunno. I've been growing my own indoor tree now for the past 4 yrs...and its looking better all the time. Does anyone know of xmas tree recycling centers in their area?
I think i will make this my goal next xmas!
end rant.
anyone have thoughts?

Around here all christmas trees are recycled. I think growing the trees, using them and then turning them into mulch or compost or something is probably much less harmful than all the energy and pollution it takes to produce artificial trees. So it's probably not ideal, but more than likely not as bad as it seems...

Wow, I was just thinking the same thing, seeing disguarded trees by the trash for pickup. My tree is fake... but the ornaments are real  ... so it's a push. Right? Maybe my tree was made out of recycled plastic, I'm not sure. My cousin has a fake one also, she goes to the lot where they sell them and gets trimed branches. They provide the smell of a real tree plus the mess of pine needles in the rug

BTW as far as real or fake being good or bad? I live on a mountain that's probably 80% covered in pine trees, bringing them in the house in insane ;) :D

My mom spends the extra money, and buys the live trees that can be planted after christmas is over. We have some trees that are over 15 years old that are huge now! I think that if you buy fake trees you are supposed to see if CFCs were used. ;)

I have a bunch of Christmas trees growing on my land. I could never cut one down, unless it's sick and dying, then it gets burned. As for fake or real I never have one at all during the holidays. I prefer to string lights up in the windows.

I agree with toman, most artificial trees are made in factories not even in the usa by people who probably make $1.00 an hour or something. and the people who sell and raise them around here thats there lively hood ya know, and they recycle them when there done at least thats how it is here in the country waste not want not!! maybe cities arent like that though. I buy the live trees and plant them around my yard like a border or fence.
thats just my opinion, I am sure other places abuse real tree's which wouldnt be good they really should be recycled, one local farmer/handyman around here makes wood pelletts for heating which he claims is environment friendly and he makes them with no chemicals, but he's kinda whacky so who knows ok enough rambeling from me!!!!

...hehe....emotionally hurtful...you make me laugh toman!
this reminds of a line from Up In Smoke:
Chong gets a ride by making it look like he has big b00bies
(Pedro: "Hey, that's false advertising!").
...eagerly awaiting your "real or fake part2...." thread:)

Ugh. Let me tell you my recent thoughts on this...A couple of weeks ago, I was at a gas station, and I happened to notice the extra 20 or so LIVE trees they had lying on the ground. Disgusting. I mean, I know we have Christmas Tree farms, and that they continuously replant. But still. Well, hopefully they cut those extras up for mulch. We have a plastic tree (for the kids, as we don't celebrate CHRISTmas, but the gathering and celebration of family and friends and they do enjoy the presents, ha.), but I have had it for several years now. I tried one of those baby balled trees, and after I planted it, it died. So, I felt bad about that, and at least this way I am not going to kill another tree. Though my mom did bring me some baby pine or spruce (not exactly sure) trees from my aunt's woods, to plant in our yard, and four of them have survived. I really wanted to buy some land that had been a Christmas Tree farm, but it finally sold, before we had the chance.

yeah red,
it kinda seems like a never ending issue. Even on my walk to work this morning (...ahem 4 weeks after the holiday!!!) i saw atleast five trees lying out for the trash
...im a tree guy so...

The way to tell is that pine needles grow in clumps of 2-5 off of the branch. Spruce needles grow independently off of the branch:)
