View Full Version : Tsunami: the latest fad...

I know it's trendy right now to give money to tsunami victims. I guess I can't complain about people giving to others in need, but last I checked, something like forty to fifty thousand people die every day as it is due to hunger, disease, violence and general poverty and political unrest. Just something to think about... All this huge deal over what amounts to the people who die every three days and the others who are suddenly living in conditions still superior to that of a large percentage of the world population. G'day!

I know why help some when others are suffering aswell.
I agree completely!
Itīs ridicolous to give somebody a grain of rice when his family are dying.
With more intelectual people we can make a little utopia in our own neighborhood why care about the rest.

great point toman!
I also wonder when someone will come out and say, ok enough is enough!!!....lets start helping the others that you speak of with all this generosity.
..hehe on another note......I had to laugh the other day, i was channel surfing by CNN and the caption they had up at the time was: "WAR ON NATURE" .......heheh.....
man...so much war!

Yes, I also see this as a sort of fad. Though, as far as fads go, this one actually helps people. My issue is not with the relief for the tsunami victims. It's with the media and how it seems to have a "flavor of the week" sort of mentality when reporting human hardship and catastrophe. If the mainstream media payed any attention to half of the humanitarian disasters in this world, I think that we'd see an amazing outpouring of support for those other, less popular issues in the world like... The genocide in the Sudan, the mess in Basra, in Aghanistan and a number of other horrific circumstances around the globe.

while you all make valid points
and i honestly do understand the frustration
i don't think that it should matter
maybe for those who donated who haven't before to such causes,
obviously they were moved enough to donate
I agree that the media kills it
they kill everything........
i understand be frustrated
it seems like there are less and less people helping each other
but it is useless for me to think about that aspect of it
i have to have faith to keep helping
and i do
and when the turnout is devestatingly low
and my heart sinks
i smile and realize that i have to make a point to spread the word for next week......
i have to believe that there are more good people
peace :D

This almost always happens after a tragedy. Other people's needs are thrown in our faces and we feel compelled to give. This is great, it is just unfortunate that something as awful as the tsunami has to happen in order for people to realize that they have something they could give to help those in need. The same thing happened after 9-11. Everyone was giving to the Red Cross and neglecting the other charities around the world. It's commendable that people give in times of great need, but it would be amazing if they gave at other times as well, when the charities really need the help. Loads of people gave blood after 9-11...I have to wonder how many of those people still give blood to the Red Cross.
G'day to you too toman.

good points by all, It's kinda like being played by the Bush propaganda machine. Where Colin Powell has already said that the U.S. Kick'in in Bucks Is good for the administration's image with the rest of the world. Personally, I donate what I can year round, so I'm not against charity at all, just being punked. HEY IS THAT A SUNAMI IN YOUR POCKET OR ARE YOU JUST HAPPY SUSHI-ME? BTW Real Sun, You are a real sweetie. Peace

If we didnt help, the numbers of death could double 300,000 people in a two week span. (disease) I think its a worthy cause. :D I gave to doctors without borders, an organization who desperatly needs the funds.
