have any of you ever thought much about retribalization?
it is basically the movement of mankind back to simpler times, living in smaller groups, thriving from the earth naturally.
a lot of civilizations have predictions about it. The mayans believed that after the 13th baktun (a era in history starting in the 1600's and ending in 2012) comes, retribalization will come.
Have any of you ever thought about how that might all go down and where you would expect to see yourself fitting into that?
no more internet or anything like we've come to know so closely that makes up our world today. thinking about it recently has spawned some interesting images in my mind. a landscape of broken down buildings ridden with plant growth... i could go on

Hey, you've been reading my mind.
Foraging, gathering, and migrating with the seasons would be great. Of course many would not survive and it would naturally end up small groups.
Broken down buildings and all the junk would get ate up by plant life.
Our diets would be completely different. No more proccessed food. Everyone's teeth would last longer.
Your post got me thinking about all the things that have been invented since the 1600s. Modern day inconveniences. How strange would it be to have none of them. It's wierd enough when the power goes out and I keep automatically going to turn on a light switch.
A bad enough war could wipe everything out. There would be mass panic for a while. I'd be hiding in the woods with a big stick and my cans of beans.
I could go on also, lol. Great topic!

It's really intriguing. In a way it sounds awesome..in another way it sounds terrifying.
I would love to get rid of all the consumerism and environment plundering that goes on now.
On the other hand...I'm awfully addicted to the internet! But, I guess I'd adapt.
I used to have a fantasy of just going and building a little cabin somewhere..no electric but I'd have to have a well... and just sort of holing up there and living off the land.
My brother already sort of lives like that...he's very self sufficient. But now he sold out..he got electricity. I think I admired him a little more before he got the electricity...but he says his monthly elec. bill is <15.00 so I guess he's not abusing it anyway!
It's a very intriguing thought. I could sort of see it after an adjustment period...the wildlife would come back eventually, plants would thrive..it'd be cool to watch that. I do think it might be kind of stressful...for example..if there are no matches or lighters, you'd be pretty freaked out if your fire went out!
Something to ponder..

If we continue on the path that we're on. We will undoubtedly find out what it's like. That's why Conservation, ecology, PEACEFUL GREEN COEXISTANCE :D , is so very important to our survival. And Natty this is a great topic, because people need to talk about these things, REAL PEOPLE  , not just the trendy crunchy granola backpackie ponytails at starbucks  .

i've always heard it called "rewilding", so if you are interested in learning more definitely do an internet search of either "rewilding" or "retribalization".
here's one website:

Due to my current job, I get a chance to observe a lot of things about people. One thing is...well, the astonishing amount of things we "require". Not for survival, necessarily. Just things we think we need. Take beer, for example. Does anyone know how many different beers there are? Where I work we sell...let me think...Bud, Bud Light, Bud Ice, Michelob, Michelob Light, Michelob Ultra Light, Natural Light, Natural Ice, Busch, Busch Light, Busch NA, Rolling Rock, Coors, Coors Light, Miller High Life, MGGD, Miller Lite, Pabst, Killians, Mickey's, Red Dog, Ice House, Colt 45, Leinenkugels Green and Red, Amber Bock, Old English. Granted, some of these are lagers, some are malt liquor beverages, and the list goes on and on. What about gum. We probably sell at least 40 different gums. Bread, fercrimminysakes! There are a ton of different brands and types of bread. And the individual consumer needs to have their specific brand of whatever product in order to be satisfied. This doesn't take into account personal tastes, of course. But just the number of different items of one basic thing, such as bread. Ok, I know, I am rambling. But it just goes to show how much "we" depend on our preferences and having choices, not to mention all of the ways we are catered to with convenience. Think about it, go into a store and look at everything on the racks or shelves, or whatever. All of that is there, because someone, somewhere, requires that item. Necessary? Maybe, but to an extent. The idea of retribalization is interesting to me. Sort of like microcommunism. The breakdown of the "Me, me, me" idealisation. Forgive me, I am going with the flow here, a by product of too many drinks (my preference for Amaretto, which I can't do without when drinking. Necessary to my social survival. ha.)

It seems to me that people spend so much money on materialistic things that you dont need, if something like that does happen some people wouldnt survive because of those things they dont even know what is "needed" only whats wanted! I wish we could live on needs only but there are too many wants to make it possible for most. Id be ok with that theres not much I want in life, material things any way!! ya know we'd have lots more money or I guess not we but society would have lots more $ if we didnt pay basket ball, football, actors, actress's millions and millions of dollars. do they make a difference in the world, what about teachers, and people who can educate about keeping mother earth alive. thats always bothered me so over priced and over rated!

Geesh...I hope if it DOES happen I can still get my medication...or I'll be one of the dead ones for sure...
depending on the situation, i think that if we were to rewild, we'd be less likely to suffer from lots of the illnesses that are widespread in amerika and also, we'd be more knowledgeable about what plants can be used in place of synthetic medicines. for example, i have thyroid disease. if i don't take my medicine, i can fall into a coma, but if we were wild, maybe i wouldn't have gotten it in the first place or maybe i could be healed / treated with wild plants...

Somethings going to happen. Maybe it is retribalization. Maybe not. Anywhere, my "crew" and I are doing all we can to ensure that we will be set up to successfully make any changes in lifestyle that will be necessary :o

oh thats brave, that shit scares the hell out of me. I would like to see global change in a good way everyone on earth trying harder everyday to live better and protect better, but an apocolypse isnt on my plate, everything thats happening freaks me out, the weather has been especially weird all over. I think it wouldnt bother me or scare me so much if I didnt have a child I dont want him to suffer in anyway!!

since i see you are in asheville, nc, have you visited or talked with anyone from Wildroots (from their website: "Wildroots is a 30-acre radical homestead adjacent to the Pisgah NF in Madison County, Western NC. (about 45 minutes from Asheville). Our focus is on experiential learning and living, while practicing, developing and sharing skills for rewilding and reconnection.")
I'm pretty sure they are very open to visitors!

Oh yes, think how much more better the world would be. I'm thinking like a brahman here, throw it all away. Buddah said when you let go of your lusts for riches and greed you are more happier and over time you will aquire your goals. People would also understand eachother better as well as the world around them without the broadcast of cons to warp your mind. Express your owns thoughts deeply, and don't let go. Don't be decieved by the hand of the wrong one. hey, there would be a great increase in good health. We can come up with more natural medicines and use the knowledge once again that our ancestors used that "civilzed" man threw away. Who needs technology? We just need biology. That's the real technology, what God put on Earth for us to use, in it's simple, unaltered form. Ah, and how the ecosystem will thrive. Ofcourse, We'll have to find a way to get rid of the non-biodegradeable materials...........

this is my first post... i'm kinda nervous...
this is a really interesting topic... one that i think about a lot...
my hubby and i have been married for ten years and have two kids... even with the kids we live a very simple life. at first it was because we were broke-ass poor, but now it's by choice. we would rather put our money into thing's that matter - good causes, charities we support, saving's for our kids futures or rainy days or travelling - than fall into the "consumer whore" category... we have 0 debt, we rent our house, we walk or ride our bikes everywhere we need to go - or take the bus - but even then there are luxury type modern-day thing's we are so used to having... like electricity, running water coming through pipes and conveniently into our kitchen and bathroom, and the convenience of having the internet :D
thanks to everybody who posted those survival/wilderness/tribalisation links... i'm gonna go check them out... and it's one thing to just prepare yourself, but i'm always thinking about the kids... they are always hurt the worst in times of chaos and massive upheaval and change... teach your children well....

we're in Lane County, sort of central western oregon... we're originally from TX, my husband was offered a job here and we gladly accepted the opportunity to move away :) we love it so far.
You should get lost here if you can, it's a very cool place. Come out during the Summer that's really the best time... in the mountains you have the natural hot springs that rock (clothing optional and beautiful views) and you have the coast with the awesome sand dunes along HWY 101 (ever been sand dune skiing?) We took the wheels off our skateboards and skated down the dunes, lots of fun but i bet it would work better with snoboards... or even large card board boxes or snow sleds... anyway... i'm rambling... :) The coast here though is cold, the water is really cold, you don't see too many people windsurfing or anything, it's mostly the peace and quiet, and running amuck along the trails and dunes... and just walking the awesome beaches that are never crowded... just about every time we've gone to the beach we had entire stretches of beach all to ourselves... awesome...
Also during the summer there are a lot of fairs and festivals, like the canon beach sandcastle festival, Oregon fair and Lane County Fair
i just realised you said you loved oregon, so maybe you already knew this stuff... :) sorry :o

Not yet, but I feel like I've been preparing for it all my life! This year or next year will be my first.
I have met people who HAVE been to the gatherings, which is how I got interested in them, and they all say how wonderful it is. It's a really great enviornment, even to bring your children to! Very positive, and dinner, several thousand people eating around a fire... It's just mind blowing, imagine the vibes. It's amazing. It's workable anarchy. I am really looking forward to each and every gathering and I will attend as many of them as I am able :).
I hope to someday see some of you beautiful souls at a gathering :)

North American Rainbow Family Websites (http://www.welcomehome.org/rainbow/events/regional.html)
Also, and probably more relevent to meeting people involved quickly,
Regional Rainbow Potlucks & Drum Jams (http://www.welcomehome.org/rainbow/events/potlucks.html) might be one in your area :)
Keep in mind the information on that site is a bit dated, so you may certainly want to CHECK if they're still going on where they say they are and such...
And you're welcome, :)

yay, looks like there might be one:
"Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota
3rd Sunday of every month; location is Hidden Falls during spring/summer/fall. The location is about one mile south on East River Road at Ford Parkway in St. Paul. Enter the park at the north gate. Park in the first lot. Once there, you will see a shelter. Near the restrooms will be directions to the exact location. Bring food, your own dishes, friends, musical instruments, and love. From November through March the Seward Community Co-Op Cafe has been kind enough to let us use their space. The Seward is located at 2129 Franklin Ave E in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The potlucks happen from noon to 6pm. For the April through October potlucks we met in the park where we have met the last two summers."
i'll email the co-op to see if they know if its still going on.
thanks again.

undefinedundefinedI cant say that I've heard alot about retribalization, but its really interesting to learn about it. I must say that's something Ive thought about. I lived in the country surrounded by woods as a child (I live 3 miles away from my parents home). I used to find arrowheads and wonder how the inhabitants lived.
Ive always been interested in rewilding. Are there any groups around IN? What are some other websites?
Thanks,
Peace & Love

It sounds like an interesting concept. When I get done with nursing school, my boyfriend and I would like to settle down and build a house that is pretty much self sufficient. We already have plans written down (thanks to Mother Earth News), and we are starting a budget on how much it would cost. But I am thankful that I have found someone that has the same ideologies that I do. We don't want to depend on things like electric and water companies to live. And I am sure that if you go to the library they would have resources to help you out. :o
