Read DreadHeadHQ.Com (http://www.dreadheadhq.com/) (my favorite dread sites and one of the best) DreadFAQ (http://www.dreadheadhq.com/dreadlocks_questions_index.php).
Dreads are a lot of work and a big commitment if you intend to "go all the way", but yes, they can be uber cool, uber sexy, and just, well, uber :).

yeah the HQ is where I get my dread products from. I wouldn't got have someone do it for you at a salon tho' have a friend do it. salon dreads are cheap and part of having dreads is taking the time to work on them. my dreads started very rough but have become the object of much praise from friends and random strangers. do it the right way. you'll be glad you did. and DEFINATELY go to dreadheadHQ. they have very good instructions and great products.
hope that helps... maybe i'll get a good pic of my dreads online for you to see

guys with dreads are sexxxxxxxxyyy. me and two of my friends are dreading my hair over spring break... maybe before because i get impatient :D but i would also definitely recommend dreadheadhq's products or knottyboy (www.knottyboy.com) because i've seen people with dreads who've used both and they both worked good.

i would say the wax is good at first but should be weanted off as soon as you can. it's still cool for the occasional (one a month) application to keep them from getting really dry and brittle which def. happens in winter and like after swimming pools

dreads arent a pain at all..you kind of bond with them in a way, so its all worth it, y'know? ^^;;and you only have to take time out to maintain them once a week or so..stuff like rolling you can do whenever.. and i agree with the suggestion not to get them done in a salon..i got mine done that way (cause it was the condition that i got 'em done that way if i got dreads)and the guy did an alright job, but i just feel kinda like i got a bit cheated out of a step..ierno, sentimentality i guess ;)

I have wanted dreadies forever now, and I've tried having friends do them a couple of times but I have one slight problem- my hair is too soft and silky. I want to dread naturally, hence no salon, but my hair seems to go against me. I tried washing my hair with everything, bronners, dreadpoo, everyday homemade soap, not washing at all, anyone out there have any suggestions?!

hey,
just a few comments/suggestions, moonflower - " my hair is too soft and silky". This doesn't matter. Any hair will dread eventually (sometimes even just by leaving it alone) - it may just take longer to develop dreads. May i suggest, washing your hair 2 times/week, towel dry and no brushing. Do that for a couple weeks then start palm-rolling wax sparingly to 'organize' the arrangement of locks on your head :)
...and, theREALsun - "does anyone know the ideal length to start dreading?"
Good question, and probably more related to simply managing new dreads. Longer hair is usually tougher to manage in general...so just for fun i'll say that shoulder-length could be ideal :D
Don't forget that TIME is your best friend when starting dreads!

...the obvious issue about the starting length!
Your hair will drastically shorten if you plan on thick dreads...and not so much so if you're planning on thin ones. I thought of a good analogy while walking lastnite...
take a few pieces of string (to approximate the length of your hair) and roll and twist them in your hands to create some knots in it. The length difference between the starting length and the finished length is what your hair will go through...
..i dunno i was kinda high at the time too:)
weee....no more junior status!

but as i understand it (and i could be wrong as i don't have dreads myself), you can start out with thinner dreads and they will get thicker as time goes by because you're always growing new hair, so don't worry, you won't have to stay with super thin dreads forever if you don't want.
is that correct?

hi,
... you can start out with thinner dreads and they will get thicker as time goes by because you're always growing new hair...
I would say they get thicker moreso (is that a word?) because the dreads always wanna lock up with themselves...so 2 thin ones may join together and continue growing as a thicker one:)
...but you are correct in saying that new hair growth will bind to pre-existing dreads ultimately making them a bit thicker...
k, i think i'm rambling now...but my main point was the difference in length that one would encounter in the transition from no dreads to dreads...
make sense?

I cut my dreads out a little more than a year ago. When I started them, my hair was a little bit past my shoulders. It shrunk to about my chin. But, I also had "neglect" dreads, to where I just let it lock up on its own and only helped the back out a little. So, some of mine were really fat and flat (but beautiful, nonetheless.)
I really loved them when they were short, even more than I did when they were long. They stuck out crazily all over the place. It sort of made me look like a little cartoon character. :D
Those were the days... I do so miss them.

I never got dreds, or want them, not that I don't like them, 'cause I do, but I have had corn rolls and all my hair braided before. Right now its just regular, wavy and slightly curled.
