View Full Version : Keeping Green this Xmas

I just wanted to point out something which might be obvious to a lot of people but also not quite so obvious to many people.

When buying for xmas are you aware of the environmental issues involved?

Do you like to have a real Tree for instance?
Do you know there are certain organisations that sell sustainable xmas Trees? And that you can get your Tree picked up by the local council after xmas to have it re-cycled?!
Or how about buying a Tree that is still growing. Pine Trees are relatively easy to grow, just pop it outside in a big enough container after crimbo and you will have a reusable real Tree year after year.

We send 1.7 billion Christmas cards each year. That's the equivalent of 200,000 Trees and use a further 50,000 Trees worth of wrapping paper. Altogether, it all mounts up to create around 3 million tonnes of rubbish over the festive season. Try and cut down the amount of rubbish by sending virtual christmas cards, wrapping presents in recycled or reused paper. Sticky tape doesn't degrade so use string, ribbon or wool instead. Stockings or gift bags are also environmentally practical as they can easily be reused.
I have a friend who wraps their gifts up in newspaper, the first time they gave me a gift wrapped in newspaper they apologised about it! I told them it was the most thoughtful thing ever and nothing to apologise about.

How many times have you recieved a gift that you just chucked in the back of the wardrobe and let sit there for years and years?
Take it to the charity shop instead. One man's trash is another man's treasure
And why not make your own gifts! It needn't be time consuming though of course if you have time they can be as elaborate as you want.
Recipes in jars are a great idea and so personal. I will post some recipes for this purpose in the recipe section.
How about giving Plants as gifts? Everyone loves these. I allways sow extra Seeds in the spring and summer solely for this purpose. Cuttings can be easily propagated as well. Christmas Cacti and African Violets are especially great for this as they are so easy to do. You could even paint the pots they're in yourself.
Or why not bake a gift? Xmas cake, xmas puddings, mince pies, yule log they allways go down well and certainly won't get chucked in the back of the wardrobe!
Sweets are a nice gift to make as well. Toffee, fudge ( drooool!) marzipan fruits, truffles...they won't last long trust me, and you could decorate a little box to put them in too.

Make your xmas decorations. Salt dough is a wonderful thing and so very versatile, you can make almost anything with it and if you give it a good coat of varnish will last years and years. get some Pine Cones and decorate them, with a glue gun attach a piece of string or ribbon and voila! Pretty, unique natural decorations. The same can be said of gluing small pieces of sticks together to make stars ( though I know they're pentagrams ) And how about baking some cookies to hang on the Tree. The ideas are endless and I hope you will add your own ideas for a greener xmas.

I'm not trying to be a party pooper, I just wanted to try and make people stop and think about the unnecessary waste that goes on at this special time of year and the damage it can do to our precious Earth at a time when we should be taking care of her, when She's sleeping.

i think you have a wonderful point, and would never call it party pooping. the materialism and excess and waste that occurs this time of year is amazing. and in the time of gift cards and useless, but expensive!, gifts, a homemade gift can be breathtaking in its simplicity and beauty. something of ourselves should reflect in all we do, and that includes how we conduct ourselves even in this crazy season. plus, if you have kids, it's a great set of traditions to start. they will throw themselves with gusto into paper chains and stringing popcorn, making wrapping paper, creating gifts for one another, etc. it's especially fun if you have lots of kids in your family. between me and my bro we have 7 kids, ages 7-1. let me tell you that it is a wild, loud, beautiful time when we all get together. turn them loose with things they can do to decorate and they are entertained for hours, which is essential to anything else getting done. :D But the really awesome thing is, not only are you creating memories for all involved, and everything suddenly gets so much personal meaning, it is also a wonderful way to teach the young ones that we care for our earth no matter what the prevailing attitude of the rest of the world. it gets them involved and makes it practical and personal for them. it helps embed the lesson even deeper. besides, nothing beats the smell of a real tree.

Good thread :)

I use gift bags for family cause I know they reuse them and so do I, for the kids who like to tear into the gifts I reuse wrapping paper or I am guilty of buying new, but this year I may use newspaper and have my son decorate the out side.
As far as christmas cards go I save all the cards I get from people and cut out the cute stuff from them and me and my son make cards from the old cards.

I do buy a real tree every year, I know a tree farmer so I give him my buisness, really good peoples. I tried the real live tree once and it died :( and it was expensive.
I bring trees back to the tree farmer and he mulches them and sells the mulch I think? He does something productive with them anyway.

i like using random things like cotton balls, m&ms, and nail polish to make snowmen and staple them to the walls. i have fun making paper snowflakes. popcorn can be stringed and hung from the tree. i like making my own wrapping and gift bags. If you take a clear christmas ball and put a little paint in it and swirl the paint on the inside. it turns out pretty. i would like to get a xmas cactus for the house. any other ideas? :nature-sm

We use artificial trees, infact we have an aluminum tree for the front window (color wheel to boot). We reuse gift bags and decorated boxes (you know the ones that are printed with x-mas decor). Most of our gifts are hand made and our cards that we send out are bought front thrift stores that someone bought but never used. All of our decorations are used, but we like that. It helps us get into the holiday when you look at a decoration or something that was made in the 50's or 60's. Personally it reminds me of a simpler time.

We even decorate a good size log (oak or what ever we can get) to make into a Yule log to burn on Yule. All the decorations are beautiful leaves we colect from our many trees, acorns, pecans, holly berries, and a few sprigs of cedar twigs with the berries. All attached with hot glue or white glue. 100% environment friendly.

But as for your thread, excellent points to consider.

Great point...Being very Earth Conscience!!! If there were more like you (as all the "posters" seem to be) what a wonderful place this would be! We ARE winning...one caring person at a time!

HUGS and best wishes,

We are getting a replantable tree this year for the first time, which is speacial to us because it is our daughter Lila's first year with us as well. We'll plant it in our front yard as soon as it is sick and tired of living in our family room.

well, i will be wraping all of my gifts in newspaper :p i also bought most of my gifts as enviro friendly gifts. i got my mom these cups made of recycled glass that have horses on them, she loves horses. i got my best friend a pair of mittens made with alpaca fur and a tree free journal. ;) it was fun i have gotten to the point where i do not like even being in department stores, yet some gifts i have not bought yet so i must go today shopping at the mall. i hope to someday find a enviro-friendly mall with organic or recycled clothing and items, untill then i will have to buy my enviro gifts online.

ooo i also made healthy cookies that are whole wheat flower. the first time i made them and had my friend try them she is like o so these are 'hippie cookies'? :hippie:
peace guys and have a very happy healthy and nature thankfull holiday

i read in my yoga journal that shopping online actually saves gas. you use 10% of the gas if you buy online than if you drive ten miles to your local mall. i might have to do that next year, if i ever have any money in my checking account :o

What about all the gas the ups or fedex people use??? It may save us personally but I would think in the long run it uses more?? I dont know but I bet ups and fedex have insane gas bills!

In 38 years I've only had a tree three times. I decorate with pine and hemlock boughs and when the holidays are over I have kindling :) The gifts I give are handmade and wrapped in homemade paper. My kids and I give 'favors' instead of gifts, this year I'm getting my chicken coop rebuilt by one of them the other is going to build a shelving unit for my workshop.
