my boyfriend really wants to try acupuncture and I wanted to get him a treatment for our Anniversary, but I wonder...is it safe? Is it for real? Anyone have any feedback/experience?

I'm curious to know if anyone has tried it as well. I've googled other people's experiences and i've read both good and bad so I really don't know what to believe. I'm afraid of needles, and i've heard that acupuncture can help to ease that fear alot. Does anyone know if this is actually true?

My experiences with acupuncture have been awesome. You have to be sure of what kind of acupuncture you get him though... there are different techniques, i'm not too sure what the names of them are but there is Chinese and Japanese acupuncture... and I know that there is a Japanese form that is very painful... my sister had this done and she said although it was very painful, it was much more effective.

tooter- i think acupuncture would definitely help your fear of needles. You could always start slow with acupressure though... no needles and almost the same treatment!

I think a lot of it is psychological, like most anything... if you go in believing it will help you and relieve pain, then it will. Having a skeptical attitude about it might put a damper on your experience. I have faith in the Chinese though, their civilization has lasted longer than any other so they must know something about something.

I have no experience with it, but I have to mention; read up on "basic precautions" regarding cross contamination, safe handling of sharps, things like that. Acupuncture needles are no different than piercing needles, tattoo needles and hypodermics needles. The risk of contracting any number of nasty diseases is very real, and includes things like HIV, hepatitis, and more. Your practitioner MUST be familiar with these standards and procedures, and he must follow them. If he can't explain them to you, as well as show you his autoclave, ultrasonic, and spore test results for the autoclave, run away and warn your friends.
