View Full Version : Diapers?

I was at my local bulk buy warehouse store the other day, and I noticed that people were carting out huge bundles of (apparently) disposable diapers. I had never even considered it before, but are people really throwing these things into the landfill, full of shit, every time their kid craps itself? I suppose they are, but the reality of that blows my mind! I feel bad just about every time I throw something in the trash that I know isn't biodegradeable but that I can't recycle; I can't imagine throwing away what, a few hundred of these diapers that are made from god knows what, not to mention all the feces that's in them! :bawl:

Yeah, I feel bad too, because I have to use them!! They make biodegradable diapers but I can't find any that are available in the US, they're all in the UK and can only be ordered online (and I don't have that kind of cash). The alternative though, cloth diapers, aren't much better than disposables because of the water they use and the up-front cost is more than some people can afford ($19 a diaper?!). One of the magazines I get made a good point that the diapers you use should be based on what you can afford, and if you can afford both then it should be based on where you live: if there's a drought or you don't get much rain, use disposables. If there's a problem with landfill space, use cloth. I thought it was a pretty good idea.

in the long run cloth diapers are cheaper and better for the environment than disposible especially because you can save them from one child to another plus you can get really cheap ones on ebay also many people will give you there diapers after there child as out grown them think about it and the environment we really do not need anymore in our land fills.. have you looked into paper diapers they are available in the U.S and they are biodegradable so maybe you haven't looked into it very well you can get them at your local natural food store

Do the cloth diapers still require the use of rubber/plastic overpants? I remember that used to give many babies terrible rashes.

Hey Everyone! I was just browsing around--haven't been here for awhile. I know that there are lots of new cloth diaper companies. They have great design and are really cute and easy to use. My favorites are Fuzzybuns. I think they might be available under the Moms/Kids section of this site. I think it's important to use cloth for the environment and my kids health. Those disposables have some serious chemicals and dioxins in them. Anyway, the nouveau cloth diaper covers are soft fabric and really cute--I've seen tiedye. :hippie:

Oh come on. I was raised in disposables and I have no strange growths in my nether regions. Unless you count the herps...but that's hardly related. :D
I'm more worried about the 6 kilos of freaking aspartame floating around my bloodstream.

I'm kinda cute. Organic Hamlet looks like someone set fire to his head and put it out by repeatedly swatting him with a shovel. When he was born they slapped his Mum. He went to the zoo and they wouldn't let him out until he showed them his birth certificate. Etc.

Actually, I've never met the man(?). But he is, apparently, English. So it stands to reason that Libra may well be correct in her guess of "big nasty teeth". Greasy hair? I don't know...perhaps. I have an image of Comic Book Guy from the Simpsons in my head.
He is, however, a pedantic twat who, for some peculiar reason, has taken a fancy to the placing of a'post'rophes' in my posts.
I thought we were discussing diapers? But, hey, I haven't got a Canon XL1. What do I know?

Funny you should mention the Canon XL1. Brilliant mini-dv camera. Just bought my second, but it doesn't have a lens. It will have soon.
I don't have greasy hair you Septic pillock, I don't have any hair at all. Not on my head, anyway.
By the way, the word is nappies. It's our bloody language. Nappies.

Oh I see. I haven't even got one and you have two. Well, that's just fucking peachy.
You fucking Southern Fairy. Two. To my none. Wait, why do I need one?
By the way, Goldenshower Gascloud - I thank you for not bolloxing up my name.
Speaking of that. "The Dog's Bollix" - an excellent pub.
And about those "nappies". I just changed one. It smelt. I disposed of it appropriately. Disposable diapers are the shit!

I think it's vulgar to discuss our testicles on an open forum.

i recently gave the clothes' a shot ..and i let them sit out in the pail for two days..and the whole area around them smelt like amonia....!!? it was horrible.. brought back terrible memories when my rabbit was being eaten alive by maggots ..and she smelt the same way.. ?..she had a tumor and i think they were eating at that and then took over...maybe hit up her bladder?...lol terrible i say
I tried using cloth diapers the first 2 months my son was born, but he got really bad diaper rash from them. I also got tired of cleaning them.

Wow - for a bunch of Happy Hippies, you sure are hostile! LOL!
OK, cloth diapers. They're my business. I've raised 5 babies with them. I used disposables with some of them, too, but only when I didn't have decent laundry facilities.
First off: The water issue. Did you know that the manufacture of disposable diapers uses just as much water per diaper as washing them does?
Second: Expensive start-up costs. You recycle, right? Do you sew? Know someone that would sew for you? Have a few pieces of clothing siting around that you don't wear anymore? Guess what - those can be diapers.
http://hyenacart.com/prod_images2/vid10_pdid12_2.jpg You can make a full supply of diapers and covers for around $40 if you play your cards right! www.fernandfaerie.com/frugaldiapering.html
Unless you use all-in-one diapers (that have a waterproof layer on the outside), you do need to use a cover. You do NOT need to use plastic pants - those things are crap! For an eco-conscious person, wool is the thing! Again, do the recycling thing - use old wool sweaters to make diaper covers and pants. Yes, it does work, and the clothes do stay dry!
http://hyenacart.com/prod_images2/vid10_pdid14_1.jpg
As for washing: You *do* wash your clothes, right? You wash your underwear, and you don't go buy new ones every time you run out. Washing diapers isn't any more difficult than washing any other laundry - it just takes a while longer.

Do you use the pads???? I have been wanting to try them and just havent done it yet. Kinda personal but hey its life imo. Anyone else use em?

Heck yeah! You can make those out of old T-shirts, too:
http://hyenacart.com/prod_images3/vid10_pdid89_1.jpg
I do all my washing together - I just keep the diaper pail in the bathroom (It has a tight-fitting, locking lid), and we throw everything into it - diapers, wipes (we use washcloths or flannel wipes), pads, cleaning cloths, wet rags, and FBW's (flannel bum wipes - check those out here (http://hyenacart.com/FernandFaerie/index.php?c=14&p=47)). They all get washed together - one cycle on cold with detergent, then one cycle on hot with baking soda, then an extra rinse with vinegar added to it. Then I just line-dry everything.
Seriously, once you try cloth, you'll realize how much more comfortable it is. We don't wear paper underpants, so why should we expect our tender little babies to?

AS far as washing goes, I rinse well bfore placing items in a pail partially filled with soapy water, so soiled items are submerged and soaking until wash time.
....leaking is the biggest diaper problem i've had, and to learn that wool is the solution (makes perfect sense)...I'm thankful the topic was broached.

Ya I need to check em out, i am just so leary of the whole washing factor.
I am just so spoiled by convienence that it seems like so much?? But I know thats an excuse. What about leakage with the pads? what do you do when your on the go?? you cant just stick a dirty one in your pocket...
Im not having anymore kids so the diapers arent what im interested in, sorry... but I have plenty of other questions.
