Has anyone heard about the toxic chemicals that are in mac computers? I just read the story on Greenpeace's website greenpeace (http://www.greenpeace.org/usa/)

All electronics contain nasty stuff on one level or another, and I don't see much being done about it in the near future. These are huge corporations, with strong ties to government. Add to that the fact that in reality, there is very little market for cleaner, greener products, because they cost more money, and even the most green people are cost-concious. Very, very few people are going to pay a significantly higher price for a greener computer, when a non-green one performs just the same. I live in a city that is supposed to be very concious, green, healthy and have a comparatively large vegetarian population. So why is it that I can't buy good produce to save my soul? Because the percentage of the market is still so small, that it's not profitable for businesses to seek out and carry quality produce. :(

When you look at it, living "off the grid" is not 100% green. You have to use deep cycle batteries (I believe golf cart or boat batteries) that need to be replaced every 6-8 years. Granted you can take them to a proper disposal facility to be recycled, but you are using something that can be harmful to the environment.

I,m very concerned that what we've done to the planet in the last 100 years is going to blow up in our faces very soon. Most people seem to have their heads in the sand about it. What can we do? :(

it is blowing up in our face. there are signs of environment hurting us as a human population everywhere. ingnorance is bliss for most of the population. they dont care, they say, o i will be dead by that time or something like that. but guess what, it is happening. for one there are stronger hurricanes and strange weather patterns. also diseases that are triggered by the environment and pollution are ever increaseing as time goes on.

the best thing to do is to set a good example by doing the best you can to live sustainably, in my opinion. personally i want to work for advertising or the media and scare people about our earth. fear seems to wake people up for the most part.

hmmm sorry for the long rant, i love the earth :hippie:

peace and love

a lot of people don't scare that easily, though. i feel like i'm almost constantly trying to make the people around me see what we are doing to the environment and how it's already showing some pretty big effects of the harm we've done, but most people only care about themselves or are in denial that it is all that bad...they don't listen to reason. my sister is one...she'll drive 1/2 a block to the bus stop to pick my nephew up, or drive a block to the corner store where she picks up milk, potatoe chips and candy. i'll put my babies in thier double stroller and walk 3 blocks to the bank or the nearest store...i recycle, limit my television and computer uses so as to decrease my impact on the energy grid and i eat a healthful vegan diet, but that's just a little bit...i still have a computer and a television...i still live on the grid (not that i have much choice when renting a low income apartment...i take what i can get for the moment). but if everyone would walk more and drive less and watch less television, and get more environmentally freindly vehicles, turn the television off for even a few hours a day and so on and so forth we could make a difference, until then those of us whose heads aren't in the sand do whatever we can. honestly, how many bio-diesel or veg oil cars do you see on the road? how many bio-diesel gas stations are there? we need to do our personal best to do our part for the environment as well as trying to educate others (despite thier love of ignorance) and we need to focus on raising children to have compassion for others and respect for the earth, so that future generations will be able to live in harmony with thier surroundings (however we seem to be light years from this with no time to spare to correct hundreds of years of mistakes). sorry i rant and rave so much...but really it is important to me as it should be to the entire living world that we fix things before we have a total environmental meltdown.

Please no lectures on the benefits of recycling until after you have watched the videos. Thanks, lol.

In my county, the 4h club holds once a month recycling. the 1st sat of every month. The kids run it, do not get paid for it. Make money from it for there club by turning in the aluminum etc...

The county land fill is near the county jail, the inmates work at the land fill, doing the jobs that we do not want to do.

Maybe other counties should revise there programs? Be alittle smarter, budget better. Companies could make there packaging biodegradable. Americans could stop buying cases of plastic water bottles by the truck load, be more conscience of there purchases.

Or maybe we should send our garbage overseas, it may just be cheaper to have them recycle it for us. ( sarcastic remark )

I do see how costly it is and I cant argue with that, people do go overboard, but no penn and teller movie will convince me that reusing, recycling, plastic and aluminum is a waste because it cost to much money. Regardless of how much actuall space a land fill may take up. Why are there garbage barges?
Ya know what really pisses me off, EVERYTHING in this country is disposable. People dont care, if they dont want it they throw it away. Out of site out of mind. So typical.

I do see the pros and cons though. People are uninformed and believe what ever the media feeds us, with no research of there own, like sheep. Well I for one do not say BAH!!
