Hi Libra,

Yeah, I've renewed my interest in composting since my husband bought me this gorgeous Sunmar barrel composter for the holidays, and I can't wait to turn out my first batch. I live in a cold climate, so its probably just now getting warmed up, but I've been putting scraps in it all winter. Can't wait to clean up the gardens and get some "browns" added into the mix.

I've been unofficially composting previously with a pile, but it was really difficult to manage, and we had a squirrel problem this winter. Don't know if the pile had anything to do with it, but we suspect so.

I have a new blog/forum site that I'm just now developing. Recycling is a definite catagory, but maybe I should take that one step further to a composting section.

So if you have any "hot" composting tips, please, do share!

Ciao for now.

We've had an unofficial compost pile (grass clippings and grains from beer brewing :D ) that I got some beautiful compost out of this spring. It got me excited, so we modified some old garbage cans and I'm really looking forward to the compost next spring. Can anyone tell me how often compost should be turned. I never did anything with the pile but it had some layers that hadn't decomposed fully.

I think my manual said no more than once every 7-10 days. Turning it cools it down I believe. Hope this helps.

I turn my once a week, but everytime I add to it I also cover that with a layer of dirt. I also throw worms in mine anytime I find em, it helps the process along.
