I'm looking to fly into western Europe, and I'd like to be able to search flights simply by price. I'm looking to do an open ended tour via hitchhiking and public transport, so I don't really care where I land, so long as it's not in the buttfuck of nowhere. I just need the cheapest flight, and all the travel sites need a destination to find flights. I don't care! Just get me on the continent, someplace I can hitch a ride from! Anybody know how I can do this? I'm sick of perusing all the travel sites catering to yuppie losers taking a $10,000 cruize to who-knows-where so they can play golf and sip expensive champagne....

Go see a local travel agent. They have the know-how and and resources at their disposal. Just tell'em get me to the airport in blankity blank and they can do as much or as little as you want. And I'm with you, I hate the travel dot coms. No help then spam. Helpful? ;)

Yeah, I guess a could go see a travel agent, it's just that I hate doing crap like that. I'd rather do the legwork myself if possible than have to sit down with some lackey behind a desk trying to sell me something I don't want and can't afford. Yes, I'm a hermit. Happy? :D

toman,

west coast USA to Europe flights, round trip, lotsa $$$

flights to Europe are cheapest from the East coast and cheaper still from Canada to Belfast, Ireland.
(exchange rate per US$ is $1.05 CAD)
try www.flyzoom.com from Toronto or Montreal.

and the under 26 Eurorail youth flexi pass of 15 days rail travel over 2 months sounds like it might fit you.
participating countries:
Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Republic of Ireland,
Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands Norway, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland
the up front cost is a bit, but, two weeks of rail capability stretched over two months makes it a pretty good deal.
check www.raileurope.com for details.

if you're not a language wiz , Dover publishes the "Say It in..." series of phrase books.
they're concise, practically organized, well bound, and small. priced $3 to $5.

also, I came across this site www.backpackers.com that might be helpful.

wander, adventure, learn.

Thanks for those tips; the rail pass and stuff I'm aware of, but I hadn't thought to fly out from Canada. That sounds like something to look into, as well as the price differences between west coast vs. east, as getting to the east coast wouldn't be hard, either by train or hitching...
