So, I was at a friend's house the other day and a Walmart commercial came on announcing that Walmart is going green.... It confused me at first. I'm not so sure about it, being Walmart and all. Another bandwagon for them to jump on and improve their image with I guess. Hopefully it's for the best!

They will never be green in my book. The only green they care for are the ones in our wallets. They don't even sell real organic!! They may be going green, but they are still running mom & pop places out of business.

Yes..their organic is probably from China (and they do not recognize US or Canadian organic standards)

Even so...Icky.

i think out of the however many thousand stores they do actually have 4 stores that are quite green, solar, energy saving stuff, gray water systems (starting to sound like my dome plans) but i doubt it's any sufficent percentage of what it takes to run the store.

both my wife and I worked there when we met, the only green practice they use regularly is crapping on the employees and recycling their payhecks back into the store by selling everything. worse that the company stores of the coal mining days.

Wal-mart is just a non groovy place all around. Every time I had to go in there (almost kicking and screaming) I get such bad vibes. And, none of the employees looked happy, or healthy for that matter.

I hate Wal-Mart! The one in my area already sells "organic" products, and I always bust people's bubbles by looking at the label and exclaiming loudly how un-organic it is. Then I start ranting about... everything. Heh. :D

Thank you :)

I have big concern that "going green" will be a short term trend with businesses. Like 20 years from now they will look at it (like many look at the 70s earth movements) and said "wow we sure had our heads up our ass didn't we. What a lot of wasted time on something that didn't change our lives over night... throw another baby penguin on the fire honey!".

I know i'm making a funny, but I am serious. I would love to see the green movement really catch a lot of people and make them think "you know I have been wasting our resources and if I want my children and future generations to enjoy life like I am, I need to do my part." I mean, hell, with that mentality back in the 30's people helped win the war with rationing. People had to do with out! I think after the war was when greed and consumerism took over our lives and unfortunately my generation has seen the brunt of it.

yeah, it makes me sad and worried to think that "going green" is probably just another marketing trend. booo!

it's really a shame that we're throwing away all these beautiful things, though. i have to go on a hike or get somewhere natural every weekend, or else i feel myself starting to go slightly insane, and not in the enjoyable way.

another things about "green" products is that a lot of them still have tons of crap in them. for example, i went to CVS to try and find some shampoo. i looked in their "environment" section or whatever they call it, and all out of the brands in there, i think 3 were legitimately organic, and only one had recycled containers. >_<

ya, you gotta read the labels to make sure its not just a marketing ploy.
But they laws are in the works on changing all that, to have stricter policies on organic standards.

I really hope its not a fad, I hope it sticks around, but I think enough people practice it and are teaching it to there children, so out future may actually be saved. I know my son is on the right path and he is 5!

And thanks to you Denise, I have been reading labels more closely.
If i see the word "Fructose" I pass it up. I just wish I could get JuJu to be more strict on that.

I hate the way wal-mart smells. I went in there the other night to buy an apple to smoke out of (I'm at my parents' house for thanksgiving) and it smelled like burnt popcorn and plastic. it always smells like that. I try to only go when there's no other option.

something's not right when you can buy a gun, baby powder, and a mcburger all at the same place. it screams, "we're not passionate about any one product, so long as you buy them".

i'm so jaded about what's actually "green". even the cupboard, a natural foods store in my town, sells bread that has high fructose corn syrup. :thumb

the one(s) by us stopped selling guns and rifle ammo

and no more layaway

c'mon, it's all farms and hunters around here. opening day of gun season is an official school day off and they don't sell guns

oldkzildjians

gun season? you mean like hunting season?

I'm confused. they stop selling guns on gun day?

that's cool that they stopped selling guns at your wal marts.

I forgot who it was but I remember a quote from some guy in the 60's: "a hand on your cock is alot more fun and moral than a gun in your hand".

CowboyHippy
11-25-2007, 01:43 AM
stopped selling them completely

gun season = hunting season, as opposed to archery season, also a hunting season. Hunting and fishing is a way of life around here. as well as (pardon the stereotypes, because here it's true) old ladies sewing quilts. them not selling guns and fabrics is being takes as a bunch of dumb millionairs trying to squash out small town life around here. I had a bunch typed here but it's better suited for another thread. dont want another post about threadjacking.

I think everyone on here needs to realize that all of this concern about Walmarts organic section is just that, a concern. Farmers are worried that Walmart "might" start importing organics, they are not doing so yet. Also, 10% of all organics sold in the US are imported.

I also think it is notable that the reason most farmers are against walmart offering organics, is they are afraid that this will lower thier profits from said organics. Which in and of it self is a capitolist concern...just like the concerns walmart has.

My point is, you cant hate someone or something just because they/it are making more money than you. That is the whole basis of this country, free trade, a man's right to run his business to the best of his ability.

And I applaud walmart for making organics affordable...You all must be rich...cause I cant afford the organics at our local "earth friendly, Im so popular with everyone who want to look green" store.

So bash all you want, with your ill informed, poorly researched claims, I think its great that thousands of poor people get to eat tonight.

i thought their point was that the stuff walmart sold and labeled as organic wasn't truly organic. kind of like saying a nuclear bomb is organic natural becasue all of the stuff it's built from comes from the earth

example beef labeled as organic because it's steroid free but it's still fed boosted corn and given other drugs.

Ya, that was the point. If its organic it should be organic, simple as that.

Maybe reading a whole thread would help huh, before you start your rants. Poorly researched, sometimes you make me laugh, you get so passionate about your posts but I think you only graze the issue (s).

Granted most people dont like Walmart, not because of what they are doing today but what it has done as a whole to many small towns. They are building a SUPER walmart here, and right next door, there is already a walmart, which will now sit vacant because what store will move in there, next to this giant. So one more vacant lot here in my town, more land wiped out to build a super giant store so people can save .50 cents on a loaf of bread, and buy sneakers while getting a hair cut. A fast paced nation of nothing but consumers, we will consume all, untill there is nothing left. For what? To save a buck, to make a buck..... I say FUCK that.

Exactly. We are a nation of consumers, not conservers. It will be our downfall if we don't change our ways. Why do you think we are in such debt with credit cards? We want and want, but don't want to conserve the money we make for when we really need it. It's the old keeping up with the Jones' syndrome. Because we spend too much we are in debt and it's all catching up to us and ruining our economy.

Do you like to read? If so you should pick up Daniel Quinns "Ishmael" great book. The leavers and the takers. Us being the takers.

I was simply stating the facts...lol, and yes I like a good rant, puts me in a happy mood. :D Im a chef, as such I have done some studying on organics, I even spent a week living on a organic farm and working there. There are stringent laws on what can and cannot be labelled organic. Walmart organics are as organic as any other stores organics. I feel that stating untruths (walmart labels nonorganic food organic, then sells it) as if there were true is ridiculous...thats all I wanted to point out.
