Grocery stores have removed the pizzas – pepperoni pizzas sold under the Totino’s and Jeno’s brands – Thursday afternoon, following a recall issued by General Mills.
"Any time we have a recall, we do the exact same thing," Food City Senior Vice President Tom Hembree said, adding that the pizzas were removed from the shelves and immediately destroyed.
General Mills issued the recall because there may be a link between the pizzas and an E. coli outbreak that has made 21 people sick, including nine who live in Virginia and Tennessee.
While investigating the outbreak, officials with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention noticed nine of the people affected had conFrom Page A1
sumed the Totino’s or Jeno’s pizzas. The recall applies to 12 different types of pizzas manufactured at an Ohio General Mills plant since July.
People infected with E. coli can develop severe bloody diarrhea and abdominal cramps within two to eight days. The infection can have more serious side effects, including kidney failure.
