I havn't seen "The Golden Compass" yet, but the only thing I've heard about it is that it's "controversial." Is it really that bad? I've seen clips and previews and all that, it just looks like a really good movie to me....

I saw it over the weekend. I enjoyed it and don't really see the big fuss about it. the only thing I think that got the religious right's (wrong's) panties in a wad was that this takes place in a parallel Earth were people's souls are outside of your body. These souls are called daemons (pronounced "Dee-mons"), they shape-shift into animals and if they are harmed the mortal is harmed the same way.
Other than that, the author is an Atheist. So what, so are many other famous authors who have had movies... just because this looks like it's geared to older children and younger adults, I think they feel threatened. The only thing I will say is if you take your children, there is a pretty graphic (but brief) scene when the polar bears are fighting. The hero knocks the jaw off his rival then mauls him. We heard everyone gasp (even the kiddos) in the theater. I almost screamed "HOLY SHIT!".
But it is a good movie.

Wow those people are crazy haha.
I saw it a few days ago and the only thing that got me twisted was the ending. I know its a set up for a second movie (I pray) but overall it was a good movie.
Uncle John Im with you on the bear part...only I couldnt hold in my Holy Shit, it just came out without me thinking about it. Luckily it was all adults in the nearly empty theater.
People are just wayy to sensitive too others trying to trash Christianity.

I finally got to see it, and at the end i got to thinking about how
i couldnt help thinking that the majesterium represents modern radicle christianity and the witches, aeronaughts etc... represent all the religions that they "hate" and call fake. all through out history you can find governments abducting people and their families never seeing them again. This is just facticle revision of the story of the majority vs the minority.

best books ever was The Hitchhickers guide to the galexy series by DOuglas Adams I suggest everybody who has a sense of humor to read them.those were the only books that ever made me laugh out loud in a library!
but thats besides the point.
I have read one, it read rather like the chronicles of narnia.
and as always the movie differed from the book.

The thing that gets me is that they guy actually said "My books are about killing God." If he doesn't believe in a god at all, that's cool for him, but the books were definitely written with an agenda to affect the minds of children.
Plus the guy hates Narnia... C'mon! How can you hate Narnia? :smilie_lo
