In the news this morning I am happy to say that the Australian government is proposing a ban on all plastic shopping bags..wa hoo! Here in Oz, we go through approx. 4 billion bags per year. Many shops opt for degradable bags but there are still way too many being dumped as general waste or ends up in the waterways or ocean.

The big gun shop owners are already saying no to this but they have to see it from an environmental point of view. :flutter

two stores we frequent are aldi and save a lot, both require you to bag (or box) your own. i'd think one of those might be in your neck of the woods

yep they both are, and I love the fact that you can bag your own.

I had a girl pretty much chuck my fruit across the belt a few weeks ago, I was like hello, dont throw my fruit!!!! The lady behind me laughed, cause thats really what I said to the girl, lol

It seems to me that even without the government people are starting to switch over to cloth. I've noticed a lot more people with them lately. My neighbor is completely redneck (Don't get me wrong, she's really sweet but her idea of fun is driving her SUV to the races. You get the idea. :)) but last night she came over and saw my various store brand bags by the door. She told me she got some because she heard how many tons of them wind up in the trash and they were right by the register and, she was really impressed with how much they will hold. I've gotten in conversations with quite a few people in the check out line because they see that I can leave with 2 or 3 bags instead of 10. :D

me too!

i know that here in PA some of the grocery stores, like Giant Eagle, are selling their own cloth bags. I personally got my own from Trader Joe's! They do hold a lot more than plastic bags. I keep one handy in my car in case I end up stopped somewhere that I didn't plan about.

Australia, that's awesome!

When I said big guns I meant big guys, sorry. The big chain stores like Target and Kmart still use 100% platic bags but they do have calico bags for sale and if you spend something like over $30 in Target they give you a strong paper bag if you want.

Last night I heard on the news that the opppsition said there is no real evidence that plastic bags cause harm to wildlife. I thought what a friggin bastard. I mean how can you say that when turtles mistake them for jellyfish all the time and Seaworld have to go and rescue them because they cannot sink and feed. Gee I get annoyed with humans sometimes.

You know what I find wierd GreenGirl? You Say the opposition, whom in their right mind would oppose such a measure? i was trippin' on this last week, I heard Rush Limbaugh ( A gross poluting, cigar smoking. 12 sandwich eating, gelatinous, big mouth, blowhard, conservative, oxycontin addict, American grade A asshole) complaining about America switching to compact fluorescent bulbs, calling it some kind of liberal democrat plot. Why would someone do this?

They say things like that because they can. Or maybe they feel they will lose their like-minded friends so they opppose just about anything that will make a difference on a broad scale. Don't they see the bigger picture? Obviously not.

I wonder if some of these people in power ever look back to when they were young and remember how they wanted to change the world?

It drives me nuts when I go shopping and people are too cheap to buy a re-usable cloth shopping bag!
