Great big huge box four times the size needed to contain the product inside. It makes it appear larger or a better value than the one on the shelf next to it. Some have hard clear plastic molded around the product plus a very large cardboard sign displaying the same product you're looking at through the plastic beside it. Again in an attempt to make it appear larger or fancier than the others, who are also employing the same tactics.I think that companies need to get away from over-presenting their merchandise. It is a wastefull practice that creates unessesary trash as it serves no pupose other than to try to deceive the consumer. I think it's time we quit being part of this stupid cycle, I think that companies that practice this irresponsible waste of our resources should be boycotted. For wastefull marketing, overtaxing our landfills and for insulting our intelligence. Think about it Hippies! ;)

Agreed. Want to see wasteful marketing? Look at the packaging they use for digital camera cards. It's about 8" x 11.5" (standard paper size) for a 1/2" x 2" memory card. WTF!?

I really noticed this problem this Christmas. It is insane how much packaging is used for children's toys! Not to mention the number of ties used to keep them in a box that it takes half an hour to open anyway. It's just absurd! I think our goal this year is going to be to buy handmade or high quality thrift store products as much as possible, instead of low quality, heavily packaged, made in China, crap. :D

Etsy.com tons of homemade stuff, I LOVE that site and do lots of shopping from it. Plus they send it to you and packaging is minimal.

I understand about the toys, everything is screwed and taped and zip tied in place so it can make the trek from china to here with lil damage. I buy based on the package alot. Esp when grocery shopping.

Its all the little things people do everyday that if they didnt do everyday would make a big change. Rethink things before you buy them, do you really need it, can you reuse it etc.....

It all comes down to reduce, reuse and recycle.

I am sick of receiving all kinds of catalogs. I mean really, does every company in America need to send me catalogs.

Even from ones that I repeatedly do not purchase from. UGH!

I'm tired of picking up a magazine and have 2 dozen order cards fall out. Either put a full page ad in the paper or attach the cards in removable pages. But I do use those cards, I use them to light my WB stove.

I have the same concern guys. Twice a week my letter box in deposited with glossy junk mail and leading up to holidays like Easter and Xmas, my letter box is often overfed. The problem is my friend in the house loves looking for "bargains" but by days end it ends up in the recycle bin. What an utter waste of energy all round...tree grows, is cut down, energy used to take to factory, processed, pulped, coverted into glossy crap, read(maybe) thrown into bin.

Exactly! If farmers could grow hemp, we could make paper from them.

some companies such as IKEA now have their catalogs available as PDF files so you don't have to get them mailed. It is a nice alternative. I wish more companies did that.
