Please be patient with me folks
so back in the day i had this really cool"sweater" but i hate sweaters, this was more like a baggy shirt, loose arms that went about midway down the forearms(hung off instead of getting tight around the wrists) generously long and quite loose around the neck. the unique thing about the sweater is that it was made with wool yarn, a few sizes too big and was washed with warm water so it was thick and tight, nearly water repellent. I honestly couldnt really tell how it was made it was so tight. the "seams" around the arms where they meet the torso and alon the tops of the shoulders, were thicker, like it were sewn together, or yarn stiched, whatever....
I miss that sweater
anyone on here think they can make one?
I havent got much to trade, but I'll entertain offers

I believe the type of shirt you are referring to is a baha ...originally from mexico.....you can usually find them at trading post stores...they were really big in the 80s-90s if I am thinking of the same thing you are...I have a picture somewhere of me in it...Ill try to find it and upload it to you to see if its the same thing if you are interested...at least then you would know what you are looking for

hey cowboy...
i crochet, but only scarfs and blankets..sorry! However, just to get a better description of this thing (though i love your drawing:)), I own a very thick wool sweater (knitted), it repels water for awhile and its knitted in 6 horizontal sections. I can post some pics if this reminds you of it:)

...k i dunno about this...now that i look, it doesn't look much like your drawing...but if we get a knitter in here???... then its more about the pattern thats important:) The sweater is about 3/8inch thick wool.
the first is a neck shot that i cropped where one of the horizontal sections ends (the envelope is regular size and the size of one section)....i know, i know...its a 'V' neck that we want but....

the next is a full shot...its just horizontal sections all the way down...

well...i know its probably not even remotely close but...
its super warm, repels water and like 5X too big :D

... baggy enough i could chicken wing it without too much trouble, which i loved while hiking, just tuck my hands in my armpits and let the elbows hang
LOL...hehehe...thats hilarious!!!
Well who knows...i'm sure a knitter will come along eventually:)

Nappy Dread, I know that this is completely off topic (not to mention that I'm married) but you are just so handsome (blush.)

Well, I am a knitter... and the sweater you discribed would actually be relatively easy to make... essentially it's just 5 knitted rectangles that then stiched together and felted.
Felting is when you wash knitted wool in hot, hot water with a few pairs of jeans or some other heavy rough fabric. The hot water shrinks the wool causing the stitches to tighten dramatically, and the heavy cloth acts as an abrasive, that leaves the surface of your knitting nice and fuzzy. Felting closes up all the little gaps in the stiches and makes a great wind barrier...
Now, all of the felting stuff is really just theory for me, I've read about it and watched the process...but I 'm allergic to wool and can't work with it myself :( which means, I can't really help you. But there are the instructions if you can find some one who can knit on a very basic level (and can work with wool without there skin turning brite red and swelling like a tomato :p )

Thanks for the info herbmama and have you tried Alpaca wool...it doesn't have lanolin in it thus a lot of people don't find it allergenic...its my fav!
