View Full Version : Obese Folk Denied Food in Mississippi

At least that is what the plan is. ..
Mississippi legislators this week introduced a bill that would make it illegal for state-licensed restaurants to serve obese patrons.
I guess teaching kids about good nutrition in school is not an option. Let's just do the beat down on the restaurants that serve food.

Wow at the buffet where we live all the obiese people are there before the lunch to dinner change. They bring out all the dinner food at 3:30 and the price goes up if you have already paid by then you get cheaper dinner. Some fatties I'm told stay for both. Eat from 1:00 or so till about 4:00. Watch fat people if you wana learn foraging skills, it'd be handy if you're ever in a plane crash. ;)

Why do we have to have so many laws to govern people's behavior? What ever happened to education and while they're at it, if they're so concerned they ought to outlaw all the crap food commercials and letting big corps engineer the worst kind of plastic food to make it addictive to little children. That stuff is slow poison and who's getting rich?

So true crazy legs.
That pic is funny and a worry.
There are calls here in Oz to cut out junk food ads that target kids during children viewing times. Why would Maccas say no to that? They won't lose money or patrons c'mon. Little Johnny should be tucking into something like museli with honey and not bugging mum to by him a happymeal for dinner because you get a free toy with it.

"Mississippi legislators this week introduced a bill that would make it illegal for state-licensed restaurants to serve obese patrons."
This is more stupid than I am used to. I have always had a low opinion of the South and this isn't helping improve that any.
In New York, they are forcing restuarants to post nutritional information so consumers can make informed decisions.
In Mississippi, they are starving people. Simply brilliant. Why not force all the homeless people to sleep on park benches while they are at it and make all blind people walk on busy highways without canes.
I mean seriously... people who drive too fast can't have seatbelts in their cars. Smokers can't use nicotine patches.
... and I thought Texas was officially the dumb-ass state. No wait, it's Florida... oh no, that's right... it is still Mississippi.
So far the only thing good to come from Mississippi is a rule that slows down the pass rush in flag football games (1 Mississippi, 2 Mississippi, 3 Mississippi).

I am so tired of government trying to make laws to protect people from themselves! Maybe I'm not one to talk because I am overweight (who isn't these days?) but if I want to eat myself to death that should be my business! (I don't but you know what I mean.) I can understand denying people health insurance or life insurance but not food.
It makes so much more sense to ban junk food commercials. I hate watching tv at night. It seems like every other commercial is for Pizza Hut, McDonald's or Burger King. I record most of what I watch just so I can fast forward through them. Thank God for DVR! :D

OR bussinesses should be allowed to advertise as they wish (granted they don't provide any falsehoods concerning their product), and people decide for themselves how to formulate their appetite. If a child sees a McDonald's commercial on television and asks his parents to take him over to that wretched establishment, then they should sit him down and educate him about the malicious effects of eating such food, then take him to Peace Frog's buffet and show him what he could become - that should put some sense into his mind. Then, once he is properly informed, the child can eventually make his own decision regarding his eating habits.
Liberties are nice. And as much as it is sometimes hard to admit, businesses have rights, too, just like people. After all, the reason why McDonald's is the monstrous, unforgiving juggernaut it is today is because of the public, and no one else.

Yossarian - you are spot on.
We don't eat red meat or chicken in our household, so McDonalds is ruled out. They put beef byproduct in the fries (which has always creeped me out.)
This is hard for my daughter sometimes, as sometimes we'll be out with friends, who DO take their kids to McDonalds. This puts me in a weird situation, as I would never say anything to them. It's their choice, just like we have a choice.
My daughter will then say wants a Happy Meal. Really what she wants is the toy..
I tell her (privately) how much we would have to pay for a mystery meat burger, bad for us fries, and a crappy plastic china toy .....pretty much using those exact in words. I then give her an option how to better spend that money. I'm not about depravation, I'm want her to learn how to consider options, versus acting an impulse buys (that McDonald's monopolizes on).
When presented like that, she always says that she would rather get a bean and rice burrito from the store next door, and a coloring book later, etc. We can get all that for the same price. Trust me, she's thrilled about it too - she feels like she 'scored'.
Everyone needs to be able to have choices, but more importantly make their own decisions.
The government (both parties are guilty of this) are trying to regulate and temper everything we do.

You're right, it all comes down to self control and information. I think government should stay out of it all together. I'm just saying if law makers insist on sticking their noses where they don't belong, I think it would do more good directed at business.

Great thread! Hey call me crazy but would'nt it be cool if the government didn't do anything. Not only because it was none of their buisness but because, by their own accord, people that are in the food buisiness felt it was wrong to give people food that wasn't healthy. That they realized that people's well being outweighed making profit. They also realized that targeting children with advertizing was not only exploiting a child's trust and naievt'e but was harmful to the child's health as well. All done not because of laws but because it is the right thing to do. A healing and reconciliation to one another in love would definately be a big step in our evolution as human beings

Corporations deciding to do something based on the common good and not based on profit.
This thread is more naive than I am used to.
If we go on the basis that the country's voting system is based on the fact that the government believed that the commons did not have the IQ to vote in the president isn't it incumbent upon our representatives to legislate where they feel our health is concerned?
taking that a step further I don't see how any business can argue with having to post nutritional information. If their food is any good for you whatsoever, they have nothing to hide.
It's bad enough we give corporations the legal rights of a citizen, it's worse when we as citizen's look to empower them further.

As a dietician (yes my former life), I agree food labels are a must. The information is VERY easy to provide on a label.
And, having said that, I can say that the people who have severe eating disorders could give a rat's butt about the nutritional label. Most issues stem from 1.) childhood habits associated with comfort/feelings of happiness 2.) adult emotional issues deaing with the need for comfort/happiness and 3.) non-active lifestyle coupled w/ 1 & 2

I was merely trying to point out that it would be nice if people did the right thing on their own. Just my opinion. It would be weird for the government to intercede in unhealthful food issues while people still buy cigarettes in this country. :(

we dont do fast food either and Kris used to ask, he doesnt any more, he understands the importance of good food. No dollar store toys etc... why pay one dollar for something that will break after 5 minutes, when you can save for something better that will last. Same with food.
The government is so whacked. There is so much they need to do and what they are doing is not one of them. Must be money in it for them somewhere.

what an incredibly funny picture. i can't believe the story on this!!! crazy! unbelievable...i feel so sorry for the morbidly obese, what a sad life to live. some people are so large they can't move at all and have to be rolled over in their beds. poor choices lead to a miserable life. there's always hope though, but i guess it gets to the point where one can't physically do anything to um, lose the weight. so sad. buffets are so strange to me. very popular here (uggh) but so strange. anyway, yeah, hilarious picture though. and thanks for the story, didn't know.

trailers get such a bad rap. first of all they are portable, but yet too big to actually transport. Not only that, but you are only 1 hurricane away from getting a new trailer. So you always have a fresh pad.
Plus, once the siding goes you can always just refinish them with scrap metal which is very in at a lot of the Maine trailer parks.
And you can get one of them there satellite dishes and a BIG ASS Ford Truck. Satellite dish so big it makes the trailer lean and a Ford Truck so big it is actually a more solid living situation than the trailer.
I also like the people. A lot of diversity. Some people have 3 teeth, others 4 or more.
But the woman are easy and there is always booze. Not much different than a greatful dead concert. ... and hey, there are problem plenty of deadheads at the trailer park.
see, it ain't all bad.

lol, i know you were hoping i'd find this w/ all your shit talking of deadheads. you're unbelievable. errrrrrr how i appreciate your sarcasm, it's quite fantastic, though your talk of the dead is completely irreverant. :) guess you're not completely wrong though...however this deadhead has all of her teeth, isn't into getting wasted and NOT easy. anyway, had to speak for the dead fans (though i know you were kidding), but um, yeah, trailer parks have quite a bit of culture which i still have yet to get to know... maybe i should frequent the buffet? esp. peace frog's? sounds like he gets quite the colorful crowd (so to speak...) anyway, had to post in response to my deadies out there that aren't gorging themselves on fried snickers bars. even if you were poking...fun.

friend of the devil is one of my favorite songs of all time.
so, if I wasn't so into Dillon nad punk then the dead and the band would be right up there with my favorites.
But dillon is one of my favorites, so the dead will enjoy the back seat of the car. which if I remember from High School... the back seat of the car was always a lot more fun anways. ;)

you have mixed comedy with judgement. I have rented a trailer at times and have loved it. My overall plan is to buy one of those tumbleweed houses and plop it down in a trailer park somewhere.
sarcasm is good for the soul.
but you have to have a New Englander's soul to understand it.

I dont know any better term for the kind of all white community that all have a sawed off shot gun behind their front doors and have the confederate flag on all of their flag poles who are the what, 15% (?) of the country that still aprov of Dubya and the Iraq war. The so far conservative republicans that if you walk into the place with a peace sign on your liable to get shot. Ive seen 'em before and they looked like they wanted to shoot me.
I other words, when i go to buffets, I feel VERRRRRRRY out of place.
i didnt want to use the term "white trash" cause to me that term is just as degrading as the "n" word.

I represent Low Income America. For a long time I took part in the State Health Insurance.
at the same time. I don't drink while I am having a child. I don't abuse my spouse. And I certainly don't disrespect myself as some people do. Some of those people are millionaires and some of them live in trailer parks. You can be low income and still educate yourself. Or you can run around drunk off your ass beating your wife and be a living audition for the Springer Show or perhaps Cops.
