time to lose weight
1# a week for the next year and then some

I am 245 and want to dip below 200

done a fair ammount of reading and i am integrating healthier foods, and a little more exercise.

skipping all the atkins and south beach crap, as well as the miracle pills the best idea i have put together is a calorie intake about what i would need to maintain the weight i want to get to or thereabouts, and pretty much a sharp reduction of fatty foods and carbs. (while still keeping the calories reasonable, most of what i read adresses this as a major concern. fuel without all the fat and fat producing stuff)

no soda

any advice on foods? anyone lost any weight and kept it off?

the answer for the change that you want is running and/or weights. Or running and natural body weight as something to retail the muscle mass. Healthy eating will of course speed this process but if you do it right you will be eating the same amount or more (just healthier if you choose by the time you are done).

Seriously, weights and running. Start by running a mile every other day. (you will progress to running 3 miles maybe by adding a quarter of a mile each month) It is also important to rest. Take every other day off!... AND DRINK TONS OF WATER. Hydration, Hydration, Hydration. AND stretch.

after you run you want to bang out 3 sets of pushups (as many as you can do in each set), 3 sets of crunches (as many as you can do in each set), 3 sets of pullups (as many as you can do in each set), and 3 sets of lunges (maybe walk the length of the room and back).

Then take a rest in an easy chair or a hot shower. You will need it!

But seriously, this is what it takes. You will be 170-180 lbs of lean muscle in a year.

.... furthermore if it is raining on your running day, you run. if it is snowing, you run. If you didn't sleep the night before, you run. Anything but pain and you are running.

seriously, this is how you do it.

the workouts are the easy part
looking at calories burned per hour wieghts kinda suck in comparison to soo many other things. i am already a very large framed strong individual. i am cross country skiing and snowshoing on a regular basis and i get free workouts at work on my lunch i double time stairs all 10 flights of them. (everything i read lists cross country and stair climbing as the most calories burned per hour)

i already drink over a gallon and a half of water a day. a cop of tea in the morning and a large glass of iced tea when i get home.

after sitting down and looking at all that i am doing and will be doing the biggest change needed to be the diet. i was hoping someone on here had already done the research. tree huggin hippies and all

In addition to low fat diet and exercise, have you ever tried one of those high fiber cleanse programs?

I tried the nature's choice kit (was about $60) and I did it for a month.

So this is gross, but it's really what it does..
Not only does it pull all the crap out of your body *literally, like a chisel cleaning out your intestinal system, but the fiber bulk keeps you full, so you just don't feel like eating much. Actually you'll be scared when you see how much comes out. haha - sorry (but true)!

It works, it's natural, and gives you a TON of energy.

The only thing is you have to stay super hydrated while doing this.

ok, do you have a link where yours came from or some other site. i did a quick google and amongst a spread of misinformation i found some porn which had nothing to do with the diet, damn that al gore

and i gotta ask (and pardon the crude directness), i imagine that pulling all sortsa crud out of your system you gotta make a trip to the crapper more often. i dont mind the stairs, or a quick pace through the building to make it to the portapotty but those things are damn cold and id really not like to risk some sort of emergency sprint while at work. when i get to work tomorrow morning with the windchill it'll be about -20. i dont want to freeze to the seat.

I just joined wieght watchers and I am excited to see how much I will lose my first week. Its all about portion control and smaller meals more often, I have to keep track of everything I eat by a point system.

I eat real healthy but to much, and way too many carbs, pasta etc... I dont gain wieght but I dont lose it either so I am really hoping that this works and I can look as healthy as I feel.

good luck cowboy, lets keep up on our progress here, maybe it will be a good motivator?

May I ask why you want to loose the weight? From the pictures you have posted you look quite fit and you obviously get lots of exercise so I have to assume that you are pretty healthy.

I have to second Staff's advice. I am doing the fiber thing right now and I have lost 5 lbs in the last 2 weeks. I have quite a bit to loose so that makes it easier. My biggest problem is a serious lack of exercise coupled with a love of baking. :D

at age 28, I weighed 155lbs at 5'6 (I am short). My daily meals looked like this.

Breakfast

4 eggs, toast, oatmeal.

Lunch

Steak and cheese sub, potato chips

Dinner

2 servings of each.

Chicken (possibly whole)
mash potatoes (a plateful)
carrots, peas

dessert.

seriously, you can literally EAT anything if you are working out hard enough.

My guess is that you aren't getting your heart rate high enough when you are excercising. Have you consider lifting weights at 4 sets and doing supersets with the major muscle groups?

The best way to get your heart rate up is to run.... or swim.

stop worrying about calories. get some protein and work your ass off until you fall asleep at 8pm each night. You will look amazing!

Meg is also right about the high fiber thing. That will also make you feel better and give you more energy.

not exactly the food advice i was looking for

my exercise program has been discussed with my doctor and is acceptable
as well as the dietary reccomendations, however the selection of good foods with low enough fat is somewhat lacking.

i work my ass off at work then at home it's chores and time with the kids. given the choice of eating anything i want too because i work my ass of till bedtime, i'd rather be fat or have a sensible healthy diet and time with my kids (and at a reasonable pace become healthier and happier).

a lot of this is due to my family history of heart disease and death before 50.

Ahh, well as far as food goes. What do you like? Im sure you know the obvious no no's right?

Fruits and veggies man, lots of em. Protiens too tuna chicken etc... Grocery shop around the outside of the store, if its in the middle isles you dont need it. na what i mean..
ya know, low fat isnt always good for you they just hid the fat in sodium content or other places.

Do you cook or does your wife? Do you shop? Do you take your lunch to work? Lots of questions :)

I find making menus and having a plan helps me stick to a diet

Im just rambeling...

Im just rambeling...

I'll eat damn near anything.

i cook, she cooks, i take lunches to work, lately it's salads with various protien adornments, bits of tuna or chicken, salads consisting of lettuce, spinach, snap peas, carrots and cheese

we both do the shopping but i do see what you mean about shopping around the edge, i never noticed....

most things i like are on the avoid list. chocolate, bacon, medium prime rib. sausage...bacon...raw cookie dough

oddly my body has some sort of not producing enough sodium. my doctor figured it's due to me drinking so much water. throwing the tests off kilter in respect to ppm. i was hoospitalized last summer after collapsing and after a sloo of tests over the course of a month he pretty much said i have dangerously low sodium you could probably eat a couple spoonfuls of salt and it might help you. (still eating all the stuff i like at that time) i do gatorade sometimes, or salt my water. I have learned to feel when it's low

he also said no energy drinks, no caffeine type stimulants. no coffee, but tea was ok if i soak the teabag in warm ater for a minute before i brew it

he said it'll get rid of most of the caffeine, something about it breaking down in to the water quickly. I told him "like hell i'm going to buy decaf tea"

soak it in a cup of water for a minute, throw that tea out and move the teabag to a new mug and brew whats left.

have you tried sea salt??? I love it, tastes so much better then reg table salt.

Well sounds like you got the food thing down, its sticking to it that is the hard part. But once you get used to it, it really gets easy. then you can treat yourself to some cookie dough now and then!!!

Oatmeals good too, keeps you full longer.

Look up the blood type diet, its pretty interesting, and makes alot of sense to me but im supposed to eat lots of red meat and I cant I just dont like it all that much. Venison I can handle but not everyday.

Cowboy

Found the link - no issues for me as far as emergency runs ..lol

The site is pretty amateur in design ..and actually funny if you have time to read all the stories. That aside, I think their product is a good mix of soluable and insoluable fiber that cleans you out, makes you feel fuller, and really does make your stomach feel flatter, as you have no more bloat left in you.

This is something you do for a month, maybe every 6 months or so.

LOL yes..with the kit they send tablets to take in the evening called "Anti Parasite" or something like that. They are a natural herbal mix. Who knows..

Anyway, I'm motivated. Going to start up again today. Going to mix my 'sludge' right now.

if you do get this..do NOT TRY TO DRINK the powder mixed in just water. You'll gag. Mix w/ fruit juice, stir fast, then down the hatch. Then follow w/ a huge glass of water, and drink water throughout the day to stay hydrated.

Watch out for MSG. It's an addictive appetite stimulant and they put it in many many many processed, junk and fast foods. You have to read the labels and it is also disguised by calling it other things. Here's a good list of its codewords. (http://www.truthinlabeling.org/hiddensources.html)

I used to get massive headaches after I ate chinese food and I never really related it to the food untill a few yrs back when I realized it was the high msg content in the food. Yuck.

Just a note about the colon cleanse thing. My husband and his friends all did it a couple of years ago. Afterwards they had some digestion problems. We decided (with all of are vast medical knowledge :D ) that it may have cleaned out a lot of the beneficial bacteria as well. He started eating yogurt regularly and it seemed to help. Just something to keep in mind. :D

as much as i detest dairy, yogurt is kind of a magical food. i (after quitting the vegan thing) ate it solely for awhile, and it really made me feel great. that and chicken. mmmm. eating meat again after...10, 11 years, oh my goodness, worked wonders. never really have needed to diet, so i'm not sure if this is the place to post but...it's more about eating healthy and less about hardcore dieting. that just seems self destructive... eh, just me

Weight watchers is seriously one of the best ways to diet. my in-laws did it and lost a lot of weight on it.

i wish you all the best of luck, i know i need to do it too!!!

p.s. i read today that a good way to snack healthy is to wash and cut up all your veggies when you get home from shopping, so when you feel the need to snack, all the veggies are right there for you!

made a lot of dietary changes and this wek I have started running in the morning as soon as i get up. I wake up at 4:50, out the door by 5 and back home at my usual wake up time (5:20) after a 2 mile trek.

as soon as i started the running i have arrived at work full of energy, and i keep up a lot better pace but climbing the starts is a little more difficult, not tiring, but my legs are a bit more sore than normal, that should go away

i think most of it is from the eating habits, but i can't say for sure how much water weight that would be, everything i have read says you'll lose quite a bit the first few weeks (water) and then you start losing noticable type weight.
