ORGANIC STUDY OF THE WEEK:
CHILDREN FED NON-ORGANIC FOOD HAVE PESTICIDES IN THE URINE
A new peer-reviewed study found levels of nerve-gas like pesticides in the bodies of children who eat conventional foods. Researchers found that if a child switched to an organic diet, the pesticide disappeared from the child's urine within 36 hours.
Organophosphates were designed during WWII specifically to kill humans and later evolved into commonly used pesticides for food crops. The study has not yet linked the pesticide levels to specific foods, but other studies have shown peaches, apples, sweet bell peppers, nectarines, strawberries and cherries are among those that most frequently have detectable levels of pesticides.

Oh my! I just wouldn't think in this day and age of feeding any child or person for that matter anything that wasn't organic. I'm really not too surprised by that at all. Thanks for sharing.

Organic should be the standard, not the other way around. Yuck!
I go with out alot of things so my son and myself can eat an organic diet. Its so much more $ but so much more worth it.

Hannaford's Supermarket (out of Portland, ME but reaches my area 2 hours away) offers "Natures Choice" which is a line of organic food. doesn't have everything but the prices are very competitive with non-organic food. they have sausage links that are chicken sausage. healthy and natural and tasty!

So is this just supermarket type stuff or locally grown stuff too? Just curious b/c we have our own organic garden for summer/fall and shop our local farmer's market in the spring/summer/fall for produce we don't have space to grow and reg. supermarket in the winter for all our produce.
I'm not surprised by this report but what are the implications of this trace of pesticides in their urine? That's where my real concern lies. Do you have a link for this study so I can check into it more?
Thanks

JuJu had the conversation last night about feeding a baby. Her sister is due in a few months and she plans on either breast feeding or pumping, but plans on buying formula. I was like WTF? I was raised on it (as was Julie and her sister), but her sister isn't taking in consideration the health of the baby. I mean we plan on growing our own food and plan on pureeing the food of our future baby (and soon to be niece). We have been very active in reading up on what goes in our bodies and we don't want junk like what is posted above, in our child's body.

breast milk is best for the kids, but unfortunatley the wells at my place dried up prematurely. we used formula but i figure spending $20 a can on the good stuff vs $9 for the cheap stuff might keep my kids from putting me in a second rate nursing home when my time here is almos up

As far as produce in your grocery store, if you are able to buy organic, it will not have pesticide on it. They often use crushed flowers (as a pest deterrent).
Some produce is NOT organic, but will say 'no pesticides used' - this is a safe bet as well.
& always wash all produce because of cow /dog doody (ecoli) risk.
