but I think it that christians now a days give a bad name to christians. They hate, and judge, and do everything that Jesus preached against.

Ive had some dirty.....situations......with such a topic with a bunch of southern baptists.

Much of my family (parents, aunts, uncles) claim to be christians of many kinds (mormon, meninite, baptist) and everyone of them is the most judgmental backstabbing troubled people i have ever met. I believe that you can believe in God and live right and you would be much better off on your own than you would going to a church and putting on a show on Sundays and acting like the "perfect" christian. It is my experiences in dealing with my family that has completely turned me off about church.

Church restraines you to one beliefe, one shouldnt hold themselves back like that. I decided i didnt like church a long time ago.

I totally agree and refuse to go to church. My mother who is mormon is always trying to get me to let her take my kids to her church. She acts like the good christian on sundays but she is the most horrible person i have ever met the other 6 days of the week. She claims to be a believer, but she doesn't stick by her beliefs except for on sundays. Such a hypocrite.

Doesnt she know "god" is always watching?! :-)
I have a mormon neighbor or two, i dont know about to their family we were not around, but when ever i around em, they are real nice. Just REAL opinionated.
"Well i think you should do this and that and then go pray."

And then my uncle that claims to be meninite is not even allowed to go to their church because he has been divorced once. How can a church tell a person that they are not allowed to worship God at the church because they have been divorced? The whole church scene seems bogus to me. I'll stay home and believe my beliefs and live a good life.

But you "keep on keepin' on" my young friend. Keep walking in the light, someone has to show them and it might as well be you. Your biggest challenge will be to keep on loving through all of the frustration of everyone exploiting your faith. BTW Welcome to our board, looking forward to chatting with ya! ;) :D

I am going to have to agree w/ The Frog on this one. It seems like people who believe in christ are getting a bad rap because of the institutions that market him.
I have never hated christians... I have always hated the catholic church.
there should be more seperation between the two.
one is a belief system, the other is an instituition of that belief system that has gone rank.

I'm a Catholic.
I go to church twice every sunday.
The odd thing is, one of the churches I go to on sunday is a united protestant church xD
(There's this funny old lady at my catholic church who just cracks everyone up. The priest was asking people if they could meet one person who would it be. Lots of people were saying religious figures to try to impress the priest. Then he got to the old lady and she said "PSHH! Tom Cruise!!"
lol, she was the only honest person out of the 5 or 6 he asked XD)
I know Catholics who won't force anything on you.
Most won't even bring up religion unless someone else does.
Then I know some United Christians who'll push it on you and judge you if you're not a United Christian.
(They've made fun of me for being catholic a few times. I don't really mind though. It kinda hurts cause they're really super good friends of mine, but I just let it go. No need to hurt a friendship over a silly thing like that.)
Anyways, my point is; don't judge a certain belief all on it's own.
Generalizations hurt people's feelings.

the major problem of religion? the organized (?) churches.
i was raised Roman Catholic.
the R.C.Church is probably the penultimate human rights violator.
due to the games played by “the church” as the Roman Empire fell apart,
Europe was plunged into several centuries of backward horrors known as the Middle or Dark Ages.
famine, plague, ignorance, brutality, terrorism, filth, injustice, genocide
unmatched until the Nazis showed up to re-enact that time frame.

yeah but they also had cool catapaults, broadswords, jousting, castles, murder slits, and fair maidens. AND the search for the Holy Grail.
You gotta consider the good versus the bad.
Just because a few people got carried away and tried to obliterate the "unbelievers" or kept a few people in indentured servitude or burned people as witches is no reason to overlook the positives like catapaults and murder slits.

I used to go to church but never fit in since Barry McGuire, Love Song, Chuck Girard were a few of my favorite Christian artists. I like to ask questions and seek answers which apparently is ok if you "keep it between the theological lines".
Since I don't like staying between the lines, I started looking up different paths and found that Jesus was never a Christian. I thought well that's cool. Now I don't do church but I have found Messianic Judaism is the perfect fit for me.
A rabbi told me once that if your theology is not changing constantly then you are not growing...makes sense now.

Technically, I'm Christian. I believe in Jesus, that he walked this Earth, and that he had the same powers to do anything any other human could. He practiced Karma Yoga (which is just loving everyone, period.) and he was enlightened through that path. He's been enlightened and lives eternally, just like other religious figures: Krishna, Buddha, etc. These are just human manifestations of GOD, which everyone can be a part of-the Kingdom of God, per se. The Kingdom of God is what most Christians think is heaven (and it's cool to call it that in my book). My family goes to a non-denominational church, which I can't stand going to. They preach and preach to you, accept your monetary "offering" (while the head pastor drives around in his brand new, gas guzzling Sequoia), and then the people go back for more. I don't get it. Maybe it's because every time I've approached "going to church," my mind goes into locked mode, I guess so I don't get brainwashed or something. My dad is always telling me that I need to get down on my knees and pray, and I really just want to say "eff you, YOU need to pray!!" as he sits there with his judging eyes. Anyway, I did have a point...and it's that I think that all the major religions speak the truth in some way or another. All you need is Love.
I started looking up different paths and found that Jesus was never a Christian.
And, yes, Java Joe, Jesus was raised Jewish. So was everyone else in his time, place, and financial situation. That has no bearing on whether the Christian religion (I shouldn't even call it that, let's say..."belief system") is accurate. He taught love. There was no such thing as Christianity before Christ. Also, Christianity is the following of Christ, and, as the founder of Christianity, then of course he was a “Christian.” He was, and is, eternally here to teach us to live a good, fulfilling, happy (and hopefully enlightened) life. That is all I'm going to say tonight.

I'm Christian. I think that people all have issues and problems in thier lives that make them act certain ways. It's a misconception that Christians nice and happy all the time. Christians are humans.
There are gossips and backstabbers in all forms of spirituality.
I can't judge Christians that act unseemly. I don't know what's going on in thier lives, what kind of problems they're facing (alcoholism, diseases, spousal abuse, etc).
As for churches, some I've been in are little more than social clubs. Others were just someone trying to make some extra money. Some were lead by a person who did not having a calling from God, but thought they did. And, yes, there were some unpleasant people in those churches.
I could go on with more but I think only other Christians would know what I was talking about (prophecy of end times-when false churches rule and there are few true believers), so I'd be singing to the choir, lol.

I was raised Catholic (the whole shebang...school, church...), escaped the madness and tried on some other religions...figured out that "organised" religion is not for me. I don't believe the Bible...I can talk with "God" any time I choose...not just on Sundays, through a Priest or Pastor or Reverend. Nature is my religion...Nature is my God...I am a Pagan with a strong interest in Buddhist teachings. I also have a problem with "Christians" who only behave in a Christian manner for an hour or so one day a week...I think Church has become mainly a social gathering for people.
Now, as Pedata said...the whole misconception bit...I wouldn't expect anyone to be nice and happy all of the time...but I feel that actually has little to do with living a Christian life...behaving as a true Christian goes beyond being "happy" and "nice".

i have to say, i agree...i used to go to church, run the sunday school, go to youthgroups and christian festivals...but because i was a bit more 'free spirited' than they would have liked i was constantly being told off and judged. some of them refused to acknowledge me in the end...
now i just kinda follow my own 'religion' although i wouldnt say im 'religious' im more 'spiritual'
the way i see it all religions, christian or other preach goodness, kindness, tolerence, forgivness and treating others as you would like to be treated....
and whether you're 'religious' or not that seems like a good set of principles to live your life by...
who are we to judge others....

Truth is the simple religion. Just like this - when I'm deciding what to do - I just ask - is this something I will be able to be truthful about? If a big no comes up? Well... It's not always easy. I believe in the Sacred Mystery. Goddess and God. One or the other will always present a challenge and lesson during this Earth walk. Seems like hardly any are all that easy. I don't know much about Buddism, nothing really.

I was raised southern baptist (thanx mom) and I got tired of hearing them say that anyone who wasn't southern baptist was wrong and was going to hell unless they convert. Then I discovered that many other religions teach the same thing. An atrocity of hatred disguised as eternal light and love. F**k all that b.s. so I started looking into other religions and noticed that almost every single one has the same primary rule, do unto others as you would have them do unto you. I like that and it's fitting, don't be a prick and help people out when you can. Not only will you like yourself more but others will like you. ( I need as many people as I can have to like me cause I'm a tall freaky scary looking dude).
I don't claim any one religion anymore because I don't think there is a right one, I'm pagan. I don't think you have to pray and worship anyone to go to heaven. Just live a decent life, most of it balances out in the end.
I also think that these "organized" religions take the bible WAY out of context, I see it as more of a guide, a collection of stories as it were with a moral basis and lesson within each one. Not something to be taken literally and by the letter because let's face it... there is no way that a guy is going to get thrown into a lions den and not get eaten unless the lions already had a feast. I could be wrong but I'm guessing that if I do go to heaven I won't see too many catholic priests, t.v. evangelists, or anyone like that who preaches hate through false advertising.
I even have issues with a supposed wiccan author, Silver Ravenwolf is another person from religion that is on my disgust list... in one of her books she complains about how the organized religions persecuted and bashed the pagans and need to learn to accept and stop bashing us then a few pages later she is bashing the organized religions. I hate really hypocrites.
ok, so that is a lot longer than I thought it would be but I'm done with that little rant now. Thank you and remember.. shop smart.. shop S-mart!

After fully reading this ancient thread and following Forrest's link, let me say this about that...
Forrest, circles within circles on merry go rounds. Nothing leading to nothing doing no where.
As to the rest, it's all about truth. Truth IS whether you believe it or not. There is or is not a chair, there is or is not air, there is or is not life. There is or is not God whether or not you believe one way or another. If there is not God then it does not matter what you believe about whatever idea you have about that which does not exist.
If, however, there IS God then God is what God is without reguard to what we believe and truth is knowing God as God IS. Believing that you can believe whatever you want is the same as believing there is no God. If God is a being then God is beyond us and can only be known as God reveals God to us. If god is simply energy or force then god is nothing more than the laws of physics and nothing more than a rock or tree.
Truth? :hippie:

I believe in God, but not as one thing, not as an old man in the sky. I believe that what people call God is something in all of us. I believe that what Jesus and Mohammed and Buddha and all the rest said was right. It's just that the translations have gone wrong.---John Lennon
If someone thinks that love and peace is a cliche that must have been left behind in the Sixties, that's his problem. Love and peace are eternal.---John Lennon
The thing the sixties did was to show us the possibilities and the responsibility that we all had. It wasn't the answer. It just gave us a glimpse of the possibility.---John Lennon

There is a pink elephant behind you. Whether you can see it or not, whether you believe it or not. It is there. I have no proof but I have faith that it is there. Whether you see it too or believe it, doesn't change the "FACT" that it is there. (note the shift from "faith" to "fact".) I see it and if you are unable to have faith that it is there, (the belief in things unseen) YOU are wrong, and YOUR reasoning is messed up. For if you don't see or believe what I do.... the elephant was nothing more than than my perception.... don't mess this up for me.

The references on the Wiki link are quite informative. It should be noted that many of the similarities are later add-ons of the apostate Catholic Church.
