In the early 1900s a large group of long-haired, Christian, sexually abstinent vegetarians developed a community in Southwest Michigan called the House of David. For many years they were immensely successful and popularly known for their amusement park, sports teams and musical groups. They offered a message of love, peace and mutual human understanding, and believed they were paving the way for the second coming of Christ, who their leader, Benjamin Purnell identified himself as.

They eventually fell apart due to corruption in the top ranks and the lack of procreation although the property still remains in the hands of a few living members.
