Hey...
i wanna get one of these and i'm just looking for other peoples thoughts on makes/models that are both cost-effective, power-efficient with a bit of quality. They range in price on ebay from $5-$250 so i'd like to narrow down my choices a bit....Does anyone here actually use one of these???
:)
...if anyone has one for trade i can offer one of several homemade afgans!

Hey Nappy,
I have two of them, one is Sunbeam, not sure about the other. They both work great. They are all energy efficient because it's just a tiny little fan and heating coil that does the work. I paid 20 something for one, the other was given to me. It would be good if you could get one with the instruction book. Different veggies and fruits sometimes have to be treated certain ways before drying. There's also the matter of how thick to slice things. Plus storage of the dried food, what to look for, how to treat problems. If you can't get a book, just do a google search on drying food.
$250 sounds outrageous. I've never seen one even close to that price range.
Your afgans are probably worth much much more than a dehydrator :D

I have a Nesco brand food dehydrater. We use it a lot to make deer jerky. I recommend it. I am not sure about how much it cost because it was a gift.

hey Pedata,
thanks for all the great tips:)
esp. the instruction booklet...hehehe....i never thought of that one!
Yeah, my search on ebay came up with lots of cheapies (<$20) and some $200+ ones but these all use relatively high wattage (800 Watts!!!) which in my opinion is just stupid. Its great that you're happy with yours...it gives me a bit of insight!!!
:D
...anyone else???
...heheh...oops, i just saw that Ericka...thanks for the info!

Here's a link to dehydrating charts, info, etc. They mention dehydrators costing $100 and up, but that don't sound right  However, the charts are good.
