I don't really have any tips, but my husband is in the planning stage of making a rair barrel for me. We were at an Arbor Day festival last month and I saw one that I really liked, but he decided he could build it himself, and cheaper. We'll see!

I have a diagram but can't upload it-look online for "EMERGENCY RAINWATER FILTER" its two buckets with activated charcoal and cottan quilt batting as your filters.

Ive got two, big ol barrels with holes cut in the top for the gutters to run into, then a hose fct in the bottom. Ive got mine on cinderblocks up off the ground so the hose fct is inbetween them. BUT I for got to drain and disconnect them before winter...pretty sure I will need new ones this spring :(
