OK, I've had it. Last year I fell and ruptured a disk cutting this knotweed wilderness, yesterday I nearly did the same. (I guess I'll run out of disks eventually). It's a steep creekside bank in wild and wonderful Appalachia. Years ago Dad hired a dozer to push up rock so it won't erode, and there's a thin layer of dirt on it in places. Step just right on the hidden thin places and the dirt, and you, slide away. Rather quickly, as in POW!

I've planted some paper birches and eventually they'll shade out some of the wonderful Japanese knotweed some brilliant soul introduced to the county. The birches aren't getting old as fast as I am, so I need another solution.

Ideas? I'm thinking berry vines maybe, but suggestions are welcome, especially ideas that yield some kind of edible fruit. I'd plant bamboo but it's invasive (see - stupid idea to introduce knotweed), and native cane is outrageously expensive.

Ideas that keep the neighbors' dogs in their own damned yard are worth extra points. Non-lethal, of course. Well, mildly-lethal-if-it's-their-own-damned-fault is OK, too. The family requests donations of dog-poop-shovels in lieu of flowers.

:D :D :D

Gaston..raspberries. Thornless, spreads like a weed and you get fruit. I just ordered some yellow and red varieties.

If you want faster results, blackberries, but ye be warned. You may be cursing at how fast those spread.

I got mine at http://www.noursefarms.com ....they sell out pretty fast, but I'm sure you have some in your area too :)

Good luck!!

oh my god, thank you thank you thank you!!! I never knew what that crap was (japenese knotwood) a friend and I argue, he swares its bamboo that came long ago from passing trains. I sware it is not bamboo of any sort. But I didnt really know for sure. I looked up a pic of this knotwood and thats it, ding ding ding mystery solved!!!!!!!!!!!!! Man that suff is a bear to get rid of, I dont know what you should do, even if y ou shade it out, compost over it. You need something even more invasive.

Good luck ;)
