rit is crap. it's a temporary stain for fabric, you need to create a permanent bond
this only works on cellolose fibers, cotton hemp and silk
no synthetics or blends thereof
I get all my stuff from dharma trading
Procion fiber reactive dyes
urea
sodium algenate (powdered kelp)
sodium carbonate (soda ash, PH+ pool chemical)
synthrapol
6 mixing bottles (or more) and whatever tying method you prefer
a pair of really nice yellow rubber gloves
you dont want to tie dye yourself
dissolve 2 cups Urea and 2 tbsp kelp into 1/2 gallon extremely hot water
let it cool overnight. use a funnel for this and when its in the gallon jug shake the hell out of it, then mark the funnel because you don't want to use it in your kitchen again
then take a bucket that holds about 2 gallons of water, put in two gallon of water and slowly stir in and dissolve 2 cups soda ash. (1 cup per gallon)
soak your shirts in the soda ash, i usually go for about 20 minutes. this raises the PH and makes ideal situation for the dyes to work.
while you are soaking the shirts take three of your bottles (i prefer 16 oz for this) and put in a couple scoops dye in each one, red, blue and yellow. then fill them about half full with the cooled off overnight mix of urea kelp and water. you should have 3 primary colors and 3 spare bottles. now take an empty and use some color wheel skills and maky yourself a pretty green, bright orange and a deep purple. set those off to the side
now take the soaking shirts, wring them out so they are still damp but not dripping, fold them, twist them, tie them do your worst.
apply the dye in stripes or little pie shaped wedges. good rule of thumb is rainbows. ROY G BIV
Red
Orange
Yellow
Blue
Green
Indigo
Violet
when they are all dyed up they mus sit for at least 24 hours to react. I put them on some old oven racks i lower down in a rubbermaid tub. the key is to keep them moist for the reaction period.
24 hours later
pull them out, sut the tyes, hang them on the line and hose them off, then wash them with synthrapol, then before drying, wash them again using 2 cups vinegar
notes about chemicals.
most of the dyes are known carcinogens, mix them outdoors and use a dustmask and safety glasses.
urea is pure organic nitrogen, a fertilizer, bad stuff to get a lung full as it hits the hot water, use that dustmask
powdered kelp is powdered kelp, its a thickening agent, you could eat it if you were bored enough to but id not reccomend it. it's in a lot of foods anyway.
synthrapol is a ph neutral detergent. it restores balances to the forces of tye dye so the dyews stop reacting in their raised ph environment.
sodium carbonate is a pool chemical, dustmask please. raises ph blah blah blah
have fun, spread the love and may laundry day give your neighbors headaches and vertigo
Maybe if i make an official happy hippie tie dye video i could get it sticky'd......

okay... I got myself a wrap/baby carrier in a trade.. and I am wanting to tie dye it without shrinking it.. is this an all cold water process/ does just the dye itself shrink it..
I am going to practice on some onsies and other white garments around the house..

ack 210 bucks
seriously, the bus top and curtains took 10 yards of canvas 5 feet wide and the cloth and dyes cost less than $75. I had to hem and prewash the fabric(the manufacturer advised me of the shrinkage numbers which were 0 inches width and 1 inch per foot of length)
for the most part the dye is a cold water process. some of the solutions require higher temps to dissolve the chemicals but they must cool before applying to the fabric. the dyes lose their potency if they are hot or warm. the dyes are mixed at room temperature. i would feel safe to say that it wouldnt shrink anymore during the dying than it would with normal washing.
I sent my video to meg saturday USPS, hopefully she'll be getting it this week and posting it sometime in the near future. my slower connection and you tube didnt get along
i could make you that batch of fabric for $208 he he he

The wrap alone costs 110 and that's used.. it's 160 new www.attachedtobaby.com look at didymos wraps :) it's the stripes weave w/o any color added to it..
so it's not the dying so much as the wrap they are charging for.. it's weave is what makes it special.. the lady that does her's said it shrank from 5.2 meters to 4.2.. so pretty stout but didn't know how she dyed it.. if she used hot water to rinse.. e tc etc ..
I'm pretty intimidated by the whole thing :( I would really hate to mess up a wrap that costs so much..

Hey Howdy,
I'm an old sixties hippie - but new here. I am "Shaggy" - not to be confused with a former "Shaggy" whose user name I copped.
Tie dye looks like it is coming back in vogue. I was in a craft store chain (Pat Catan's) the other day, and they carry books and supplies for tie dying. I'm also seeing them be worn again.
I plan to someday tie dye a white dress shirt and make a tie dyed necktie - for formal occassions you understand.
I would like to pass this on: You can find lotsa tie dyed shirts at thrift stores. They are CHEAP, but many of them have crappy advertising on them. No problem! Carefully cut the tag off the back inside, then wear the shirt inside-out.

Shaggy

"White collar conservative flashin' down the street
Pointin' their plastic finger at me, ha!
They're hopin' soon my kind will drop and die but uh
I'm gonna wave my freak flag high, high!
Oww!
Wave on, wave on . . "
From "If 6 was 9"" by Jimi Hendrix
Now, I guess one could define a "freak flag" as various things, such as an overall "look" or an untangible banner. It could be an attitude.
I remember the neck scarves worn with mod shirts in the early seventies, often held together with a handkerchief ring (yeh, I wore one - so what?). Cultural note: The politically incorrect term for them in the seventies were "fag flags". Now, thanks to the television program "Survivor", large bandanas or "buffs" with specific design, colors and text are popular. Now, where are OUR buffs/freak flags?
Several companies offer tie dye bandanas. Average price is between $2 and $4. Some are very thin and scarf-like and others are thicker, like hankies. While the price ain't bad, tack postage on top of it and you have a sizable amount. OR - go to your local thrift store and find a tie dye shirt you like, even if it has printing on the back or front, cut out a 22" x 24" (approx.) square, and hem it. Shazaam - a freak flag to wear however you wish.
