it was one of them six degrees of seperation i discovered this guy

I can't believe that I havent heard of him before (some of the old timers on here probably have)

itunes has a good selection of his stuff (but no beatles or fat boys)

classic folk, especially if you like early dylan/woody guthrie type stuff

he was on the commie list with peete seeger and a handful of otheres trying to change the world through music. wiki says the fbi had a500 page file on him. good enough for me

I saw a you tube song set to pictuers thing last night. lots of negative imagery of hangins and racial bigotry, but the song is about the evils of that sort of thing "here's to the land you tore out the heart of, mississippi find yourself another country to be part of."

apoligies to all the hippies...in that state, the song was from the 60's

sadly he committed suicide in 76

Phil Ochs wrote and sang some great stuff. I think he had trouble coping with being overlooked while folks like Dylan and Baez got all the attention. It is always sad when a persons takes his or her life - such a waste.

Buffy Ste. Marie did some great music. She wrote "Universal Soldier." Her vocal style can be hard to get into at first, but she has the stuff.

Tom Paxton is another great from that era. From love songs like Last Thing On My Mind to fun songs like Marvelous Toy to social issue songs like Lyndon Johnson Told the Nation and We Didn't Know, he is a great writer and performer. He is still going strong. I remember whan John Ashcroft was AG and was covering up statues, he did a song about it on Praire Home Companion. Very funny.

If I remember more I'll let you know. :hippie:
