View Full Version : A different cloth diaper question.

I literally spent hours today researching cloth diapers on the net. My son will be a year old on the 17th of this month and I would still like to use cloth diapers. I guess I feel its not too late to start. Plus I would have them for the next child.
So here's the question(s). Did you make all of your cloth diapers or did you buy some too? And of course which brand did you like best? Did you use fitted, contoured, or prefolds? And what kind of covers?
Although I can sew, the reality is that I have neither the time nor the motivation. Plus I'm not sure I have enough experience and I don't have a serger.
Thanks

I would love to sew my own diapers, but just don't have time (and I don't sew well). I purchase most of mine used or from WAHMs. I really like pocket diapers. I am currently using them exclusively on my girls. My favorite WAHM right now is www.greenacredesigns.com. Her diapers are very cute, fit well, and work great. I also like fitted diapers and knit or crocheted wool covers. The best fitteds I have found are http://www.muttaqinbaby.com/ they are great because they are onesize and super absorbant. I used prefolds on my 19 month old for a long time, but then she started to wet right through them, so we stopped, and my youngest can't use prefolds at all because the wetness irritates her skin. Some good places to find more info on cloth are www.diaperpin.com, and, www.mothering.com. HTH some :) ETA I also prefer hemp as the soaker for my diapers, because it is incredibly absorbant, and trim, I haven't found anything as absorbant.

Ok, my absolute faves are the puddle catchers... they're awesome.. one size fits all babies... and the green earth covers... they're wonderful. The puddle catchers come in terry and fleece... and they helped my little ones diaper rash so much, the fleece onces, I mean. And then I just went back to terry... plus, I think they keep her little bum warm in this cold winter!!

Thank you both for your input. A person can literally go blind researching all the different cloth diapers that are out there.
Mothering.com is where I did most of my research, so thanks for the other sites.
Are puddle catchers a brand?
Unfortunately cloth diapers are an ivestment so I have to wait to purchase some until our tax check comes in. I am really excited to try them.
(never thought I would use the word "excited" when talking about diapers)

Are you kidding! Tax return = Baby everything. I swear, those one step ahead catalogs come to remind me just how poor I really am.

And, I'm always excited about diapers. Clean ones especially... but sometimes even the dirty ones (maybe you know what I mean?) For whatever reason, my husband and I feel completely comfortable talking about Bunny's poop in detail.

I think Puddlecatchers.com is where to find them. Yea, they're a brand of diapers.. one size fits all. They're really soft and adjustable.. and I love the green earth covers... I'll have to go home and check my order stuff for more info but that's all I can remember now I'm here at school..

Ah..I fondly remember the smell, sight and feel of a load of freshly washed diapers, still warm from the dryer! I loved it, sorting through and folding them...which is weird since I'll do just about anything in my power to avoid folding just about anything else.

I miss the baby stuff...warm diapers, cuddling the little one in his sling, nursing...

We're using cloth diapers and I love it. I'm using dri-line (AKA snug to fit or snap to fit, they seem to keep changing their name) They're really neat because they are a one size fits all, it expands by undoing some snaps. I made some wool diaper soakers from old sweaters from a thrift store - super-easy! Then you lanolize them using lanolin you probably got as a nipple-cream at your baby shower.
I am going to try my hand at making my own diapers soon. I have found some very interesting patterns online, as well as some great ideas.
I don't care for prefolds as our daughter is a heavy wetter, plus they were, erm, sloppy at times if you know what I mean ;)
Here's a few sites I found very helpful:

Okay so I checked out the puddle catchers website and I loved it. I just really liked the way they broke down the cost of disposables verses cloth. I am going to show this to my husband. He knows in the long run they are cheaper but it's nice to see it in writing.

Chaska thanks for giving me more websites to check out.

Grannolamomma I have looked into buying used ones but it seems that the ones on ebay are going for the same price as new. I have also looked at some of the kids resale shops around our home and noone seems to have them. So either not too many people use them in our area or they just hold on to them. I do have a couple of friends who use cloth but they had their supplies donated to them by the churches they attend.

BandAide, I never thought it would take so long for our tax check to get here. Or maybe I am just more impatient. While most of it is going towards our son we have decided to go away for one night and have a bit of romance. This will be a tad difficult for me since I have never spent a night without him. I know he will be fine its me I'll have to worry about.

hey, am new here but thought i'd pop into this thread.
We cloth diapered zoey from 5 months thru potty learning. Now her brother Roman was cloth diapered from birth til recently. We're just having major rash issues with him and in sposies he isn't rashy so we've been doing them at nght and cloth during the day. I actually just posted on a few boards that i'm selling off my stash now altogether and finishing him out in paper dipes. I know...i know... but his butts just too raw. We tried everything for creams with liners, and lots of different kinds of dipes.

anyway, my favorites are fuzzibunz and happy heineys. pocket dipes seem to keep my kids driest. trimmest fit. no leaks ever. I stuff em with joeybunz/hemparoos. They're 9layer hemp inserts that just fit into the pocket.

I have like a stash of 30 pockets i'm selling right now - size large. cheap.
I'll miss cloth, but the poor kids got some ultra sensitive skin i guess and battling rash has done us in.

didn't mean to hijack - but there ya have it. I'm all about pocket diapers. Easy, trim, no leaks, dad friendly.

Hi, Don't know if you can get these in the US, but i'd swear by Minki's stuffables as you can adjust the filling for any occasion and the fleece insides keep the skin lovely and dry. Hannah is 10 months and we've been using them since birth. Maybe you could try Ebay, or this website http://www.nappiesbyminki.co.uk/index.htm
