Hello everyone! Since we live in a very plastic, very manufactured world I thought I would share with you some info on Bisphenol A (BPA) that I recently found on happy hippie. BPA is a compound found in many of the plastic products we use (or try not to use) everyday. It's formula mimics estrogen (the female hormone) and it is thought that the chemical could trigger unhealthy homonal responses. BPA is commonly found in clear, plastic, almost shatter-proof items such as water bottles, plastic dishes, hosehold items, sports equipment, CDs and worst of all BABY BOTTLES and NIPPLES!! Studies show that BPA is an endocrine disruptor: it is an estrogen receptor agonist. That means the agonists can act like the body's own hormones, leading to similar physiological effects on the body. A long term low dose exposure to BPA may induce chronic toxicity in humans, and recent studies suggest it may also be linked to carcinogenic effects and produce precursors of breast cancer. In 2007, a consensus statement by 38 experts on BPA concluded that average levels in people are HIGHER than those that cause harm to animals in laboratory experiments, and a panel convened by the U.S. National Institutes of Health determined that there was "some concern" about BPA's effects on fetal and infant brain development and behavior. Look for BPA free products on happyhippie.com, drink your water from a good ol' fashioned mason jar, and dont heat your food or drinks in plastic conainers because when plastic is heated, BPA can spew out and into your food up to 55 times faster than it can at normal temps. And even then it leeches out at up to 32ng per hour. Peace Out guys! ~Emili~:hippie:
