Hey there!

I'm new to this wonderful website, so pardon my doing so if I am posting this in the wrong place. (please correct me if I do!) I'm wondering where I can find pretty, loose, and flowing "hippie" clothing? I've grown out of my old clothes and I'm going to have to buy a new wardrobe! I got most of my old clothes from my mom, and they're very tattered, too small, and not my style anymore. I know, there are shops all over the place and tons of websites to find this type of clothing. Here's the catch- I'm not very rich. I can't afford to pay $50 dollars for one skirt. (I know, people want to profit from their work, but I just can't afford that!) Are there any particular shops in austin or any websites that sell what I'm looking for? Anything helps!

Peace,
Savannah

Hello Savannah! Welcome to happyhippy! Let me start by saying there are alot of great people here with lots of great advice to share. But Im concerned with your post. You see, its not about what you wear that makes you a "hippie". Being a hippie is dependant on your beliefs. When you start shopping around and spending lots of money, it becomes more of a trend. Thats not what you really are, or what you really believe in... thats just fashion. Don't get me wrong, the hipsters definantly had thier own style, but that is what made it such a glorious time. Everyone had imagination and vision. I guarentee that the flower children werent out trying to pick up the hottest new treands at corporate department stores. But it is cool to pick up new, unique treasures at thrift stores, yard sales and flea markets. These places usually have low low prices and somtimes you can even barter to make them lower. Another option... invest in a good sewing machine and let your imagination take over! Peace Out ~Emili:hippie:

You make the clothes, the clothes dont make you;)

I stear towards comfort, if its comfy I love it!!!! Or if it has a hood, im kinda addicted to big ol hoodies, soooo comfy!!

BUT.... Salvation army, rummage sales, thrift stores or even exchange clothes between friends. I few friends and I do that all the time, I raid there closets and they raid mine, its fun and free! Or if you wanna buy something new why not give the hippy mama's a chance, they make hand made clothes that are beautiful!!

On the happy hippie home page theres a huge directory of shops, with discounts too. Or etsy.com has some homemade clothes too. Also Unkle John a member here, his wife also makes clothes, she is a great seamstres. Im sure he could hook you up!!

Thank you all very much for the advice! I was a bit worried about saying I wanted "hippie" clothing because I knew someone would say something like "the clothes make you" or "hippie follow their own style". And there's nothing wrong with that! I would say the same exact thing. I'm mainly looking for loose, flowing, and very comfy yet affordable clothing. Believe me, that's my style! I would never follow a trend... blegh!
Anyway, thank you all very much. I will for sure check out all suggestions!
Peace
Savannah

Hi Savannah,
Hey try e-bay...what you might be looking for is Indian clothing ( 7-11 Indian not casino owner Indian) Kurtas and Tunics come in beautiful batik prints and can be had at a pretty reasonable price. Also SOUL FLOWER Has what you are looking for. (There is a link on our main page) Their stuff can be spendy but they do have a discount close-out section. Good luck in your search, I don't blame ya it's a very cool style.:D;)

Howdy from West Tejas lill lady, (spits on the ground).

....I think it's rubbing off on this old Dallasite.

That's pretty much advise I would give you (what has already been posted). Ever attend Eeyores Birthday Party (http://eeyores.sexton.com/)? Or any Art Car Parades (http://www.austinartcar.com)? If so then you are in the best city in the state, if not, go and find out.

(The old man clears his throat and speaks in his reedy voice...)

Back in the good old days (the mid-to-late 60's) we did most of our shopping at thrift stores, army-navy surplus stores, and created what came to be seen as "hippie clothing" by buying what was cheap. It is harder to do that now-a-days.

I agree with others that you check EBay, the closeouts at some of the "hippie" clothing shops. You might also check out some of the discount clothing stores if what you want is loose, flowing clothing. That is my wife's style, at least in terms of skirts. She has purchased a number of things from this company that she first found on EBay:

As many have said it is the attitude that makes the hippie, but loose, comfortable clothing is a great thing to have; you don't need to apologize for wanting it. Best of luck. :hippie:

One of the many things about Carol that attracted me is her taste in clothing.

Can't fault her taste in men, either. :D;):p:hippie:

yeah, Carol is awesome and has such impressionable young family members... none of the boys started wearing all black have they? hahahaha

anyway, I think some of the hippy fasion trends are cool and all but I still want to kick the tofu out of the guy that came up with bell bottoms... luckly the raver kids have made those look cool. I was never a big one for mye dye on myself... never comes in dark enough colors for my tastes. :bat:

No, but Henry's girlfriend's daughter (sort of a niece) just dyed her hair black and has been wearing black lately - and she didn't even meet you. :p

I'm not kinocking tiedye at all, I've had a couple of tiedye shirts in the past but I'm more into wearing all black 99.9% of the time. :bat: It is more comfortable to me, you know.. one of those silly personal prefference things. I did wear tiedye when I went to see the Grateful Dead tho. :hippie:
