How come there was only one female smurf? :D

what I want to know is how if smurfette was the only female smurf for so long and then all of a sudden there was 2 or 3 kid smurfs (one of them female) and an old grand-ma smurf.. where the smurf did they come from???? I think someone smurfed up the smurfing storyline is you ask me.
