Love the cartoons! I'll be glad when this election is over. I've so sick of seeing Sarah Palin. Her picture is every section of the local paper except sports and classified as one person pointed out in the letters to the editor. Another one referred to her as "caribou barbie". There are those that are supportive of her - you know, the local girl does good thing. But, many have changed their opinion of her since she was picked as McCain's running mate. I will say two good things about her. 1. One of the first things she did as gov was sell the jet that Frank bought. 2. More people may become aware of the fact that Alaska is a state next to Canada and not ask what country Alaska is, what state Alaska is next to, or think that we're an island in the Pacific Ocean between California and Hawaii.

People really think that Alaska is another country or an Island??? Wow. Must be from looking at a map, how they keep it off to the side or something???? Thats so wierd to me though.
On a bus trip once this lady asked my friend were she was from, she said pennsylvania and the lady asked if we had giraffes in PA, LOL. Like free roaming wild giraffes! Some people are clueless I guess.
Ive never thought of Alaska being any less then any other state. I have lots of respect for Alaskans and how close to nature alot of people live, granted Ive only seen this on documentaries. Id love to visit there, plus I hear theres LOTS of hot single ruggid Alaskan men :D
I really wanted to ask you how you and your folks felt about Sarah Palin, but didnt want to be rude.

Feelings are mixed, like everywhere else. The Anchorage Daily News has printed many articles about Sarah - pros and cons. Most are interesting and informative. There have been a lot of letters to the editors, and even demonstrations for and against her as the vice president pick. When she comes home it will be a limited welcome. The democrats that she worked so well with to get some things done up here were really turned off by her remarks about Obama, and the republicans she worked with have also been critical of her since she joined up with McCain. Many people aren't happy about how McCain's people have come into the state and gotten involved with the troopergate thing. There have also been negative comments about the involvement of her husband since she was elected governor. Sarah may be getting a little less print now that Senator Stevens was found guilty of seven felony counts.
I've actually had people ask me those questions which makes me wonder if geography is still being taught in grade school. When I was in elementary school many, MANY years ago we had to learn where the states were and their capitals.
The men - most of the ones I've met are throw backs to the 50's June Cleaver era. But, that could be more an age thing. Life here is pretty much like other places I've lived - was born in Philadelphia, lived a long time in South Jersey, spent a few years in Seattle and a little time in Virginia. My family, including my children, live in various states "outside"/ "in the lower 48". The big difference here are the long, dark winters. I read somewhere that we have 8 hours of "functional daylight" in the winter - that breaks down to 3 hours of daylight and 5 hours of dusk. And those incredible mountains - they're covered with snow now. The things I miss most are thunder and lightening, oh, and there's no place to get a good Philly cheesesteak or a great slice of pizza.

The only thunder I've heard since living up here was this summer. We had two very short thunder storms a week apart this summer, right after my sister died. Think it was her way of saying goodby to me - we both love rain and thunder storms.
If you ever get the chance to come to Alaska July is a great time of year. Lots of daylight mild temperatures.

Alaska's History. Considered "Seward's Folly" when then Secretary of State William H Seward made the purchase from Russia on March 30, 1867 for 7.2 million dollars. Alaskans voted to approve statehood in 1946, but it wasn’t until 1959 that President Eisenhower signed in Alaska as the 49th state of the Union

Hey Taurus,
I spent six months in Prudhoe bay rapeing the environment (the c'boo didn't seem to mind) and loved the place. I also have numerous relatives there. Seems to me people up there either love it and couldn't be blown out with dynamite or hate it and can't wait to get out, not much in between. Is that acurate or was that just my family. :D

I think if I ever visited Alaska it would have to be during the dark half of the year. It would be really awesome for me too cause I really hate sunlight. lol

That's how it is with people I've met up here. Love it or hate it, there's no middle ground. And many people that leave end up coming back. I moved up here in 89, left for a few years in the 90's - got laid off and jobs were scarce - but knew that I'd be back. Don't know what it is about Alaska, but when I made the decision to move I felt a sense of peace and when I stepped off the plane I knew this the place I was meant to be. Have you ever thought about moving back?
