View Full Version : On the RANT bandwagon.......

Ok, I warned you...I am jumping on the rant bandwagon!
Three days before the birth of my son my husband was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. At the time we did not think it was such a big deal. After all my husband was very thin (145 at the time), exercises all the time, ate extremly healthy aside for the occasional sweet tooth binge and is young (upper twenties). No big deal, he will just take the insulin and everything will be all better.
We were so wrong. Over the past three and half months I have watched as he has struggled to maintain his normal life.Western medicine docters told us his prognosis is not good without a insulin pump and even then he faces all sorts of horrible medical battles. Our life has been completly dumped upside down. We are on a very strict organic high veggie protein low carb diet and are currently seeing two endocrinologists, one pcm, a cutting edge preventive medicine doc, a shrink, a nutritionist and an acupuncturist as well as taking educaton classes at a diabetes treatment center. At this point everything with my insurance has been an outrageous uphill battle. My husband had to be taken to the ER by ambulance (he was starting to slip into a hypo glycemic coma and was not rsponding to treatment) and my insurance is fighting the bill. So far all of the western docs have one thing in comman and that is stem cell research is according to them are only real hope of long term recovery.
This may be true on the western front of things but on the eastern side of medicine thier has been an exciting new breakthrough and because he is recieving care through an acupuncturist at a cutting edge hospital he is participating in this experimental medicine. It is non-invasive therapy working with his autonomic control system of his brain to heal itself. I guess the easiest way to explain it is in 2002 they found a new way of communicating with his subconcieness (sorry bad speller :o ) through muscle response. I would not belive it if I did not see it with my own eyes. It blows my mind. I guess each body has pathways that can get clogged with toxins and viruses and through communicating with the ACS the body can clear the pathways..hmmmm am I making sense?
Anyways it is our new hope but of course because it does not involve a pill or surgery Western medicine will not recgonize it despite outstanding results  and of course our insurance will not pay for any alternative so everything is out of pocket ERRRRRGGGHHHHHHHH!
ok so that is my rant...thanks for listening to me :o

i'm sorry to hear about your husband's condition & hope the new therapy works. personally, i am thinking about going to an eastern therapist of aryavada (sp). i will jump on the insurance rant-wagon w/ you. my insurance won't pay for a shrink b/c she's not liscensed psychologist (she's a psychiatrist aka phd) its rediculous!!! i've read the US is ranked 36th in health care by the World Health Organization, tied w/ cuba. after all 45 million people dont have health insurance! big insurance looks for every way they can to stick it to the little people. makes me want to move to canada or maybe sweden.
once again, good luck w/ the acupuncture!

whoa, Mmama, let me just say that you are admirable and courageous woman
from what i have read of your posts, you have a plate full
yet still seem to be in good spirits
i am glad that there is hope.....
i can imagine it is easy to feel discouraged
especailly when it comes to the financial part (out of pocket???!!!! )
but I suppose you just have to throw away those ideas
and realize that you will all make it through, healthy and happy with each other,
and you will always find a way!! there is ALWAYS a way!
i wish you and your husband the best
blessings and hope for easier days, they will come.
be strong (even though you sound like you are made of steel)
this probably doesn't help at all,
but you sound like an amazing mom and wife!!
peace :D

countries like Canada, Norway, and Sweden are excellent as far as health care goes, as everyone knows far far better than here. it would be nice to not have to view seeking good health care as a struggle...which is exactly how it is if you're born in the United States. granted things are worse in other areas of the world, it still sucks that our government has not realized that with life should come adequate health care as a given, not something thats in many ways unattainable for so many of us.

It's pityful ain't it?
A friend of mine told me once "It's good to have insurance, but don't ever try to use it". He was in a wreck and lost his left arm. He almost died. He was not conscious for 2 days. The insurance company tried to bail out by claiming he had not signed the right papers on the first day. He had to get a lawyer. They paid, but sheesh, what battle.
We have no insurance, never have. Just flying by the seat of our pants, I guess.
Peace,
Cassandra

Its bs! my aunt was in a BAD car accident in another state & was given 24 hrs to live. thankfully, she pulled through but was in a come for almost a month & is now paralyzed & the insurance wouldn't pay at all. my uncle had to sue them just to get the medical bills paid, which had to be enormous. they wouldn't pay b/c of some bs policy similar to what Pedata said. insurance only cares about money, not lives. we need a new system, but we won't be seeing anything b/c of ol' Dubya.
Insurance sucks! Water rules ;) (gotta love Waterboy)

Not to contribute to any thread-jacking, but insurance does suck. My family has had insurance from the same agent for over thirty five years, paying hundreds of thousands of dollars in several types of insurance premiums. Last summer someone walked into the house apparently off the street and stole a guitar appraised at several thousand dollars, and the insurance company refuses to pay for it.

This pisses me off.
I am happy to hear that your husband is receiving the benefits of a therapy, and I am so disheartened (though not at all surprised) to hear that the insurance won't pay for it.
It's like birth control. Most insurance companies would much prefer to pay tens of thousands of dollars for a pregnancy than twenty bucks a month for birth control pills... never mind condoms. CONDOMS SHOULD BE FREE!
Blecht.
Puke.
I have insurance. Great insurance as a matter of fact because my husband has a law enforcement job and works for the government.
I have sold my soul to the devil.

Not to mention....I hear insurance companies are beginning to cover Viagra. Yet they will not help your husband. This boggles my mind.
I seriously hope you find some (less painful) way to fund your husbands therapy and I am SO glad you have found something that seems to be working...
I can't say much because I can't help...but my good wishes and thoughts are with you...

LEO smoking pot and in a band? Well, it's not unheard of, but there's hope for tomorow. Now if we could just convince the rest of them that nonviolent drug offenders aren't as dangerous as violent offenders... And if you get laid off after the legalization because you aren't needed - move into selling, because you will be needed
Insurance companies are blood sucking bastards, for the most part. Of course, they did pay for my ankle surgeries and hardware, it certainly wasn't without a fight. Bastards.
I'm sorry your husband is ailing like that and all western medicine can do is hope for a change in laws and more research... But I am glad that eastern medicine is making headway in a manner that helps him.
To me, neither type of medicine is better - so long as the method helps one person, it is viable, to me.
I'm so hippy mooded today, why don't we have hippy emotes? *borrows some from elsewhere*

That doesn't make any sense. A Psychiatrist is the same as Psychologist, basically, except a Psychiatrist can write prescriptions and a Psychologist can not. I hate insurace people. We are the ones who PAY for insurance, right? But it's never quite there when we DO need it.

oh I hate insurance too!! I have none and none for my son, I make like $2.00 to much to try to get any kind of help and cant afford regular health insurance, so we dont go to the doctors unless its really needed for my son anyway, I ride out the storm!! and we both take our vitamins and eat healthy to keep away from those dr's!!
I am sorry about your hubby I hope everything works out ok peace and love to ya!!!

Here's the newest insurance bullshit. I'm on a 28 day birth control packet w/ 21 active pills & 7 sugar pills. My insurance now says I must have this 28 day script filled every 30 days. WTF   Im going to call them & have a nice talk to someone about the pure STUPIDITY of that policy. Even the pharmacist said she refilled her birth control the first day of the blank pills. I HATE insurance!
