View Full Version : Valentine's Day Idea - for Grandmas/other relatives

This is actually a bday gift for my mother-in-law, but I thought it would be cool for Valentine's Day as well.

I always struggle w/ gift ideas, and I hate buying something random and lame. Handmade/or recycled/retooled is the preferred route here.

After searching online, I knew I wanted to do something w/ my daughter's handprint. (She's now 6). As everytime Grandma sees her, she always comments on how fast she is growing - which is true!

So, I traced her handprint w/ pencil on some left over brown fabric I had (any fabric would do though, as long as it's a solid color), and then I embroidered her print, and put some little embellishments around it. I am a total novice embroiderer, and really anyone can do this, as it's super easy.

After that. I wasn't sure if I was going to make a little pillow, or frame it. HOwever, I found the coolest poem online - so that sealed the deal on framing it. I found an old frame that was kind of busted in the back (no hook), and put the fabric in under the glass. The frame is about 11 x 13 - I recommend a min. of this size, or larger for a tray)

I then printed out the poem and put it on thin cardboard (just random left over from packaging), and used black electrical tape to attach it to the back. I guess I could of used staples or glue, but I don't have any on hand. I also had some old retro stickers. I'll have my daughter sign it later today on the back as well, and write her age.

Finally - we were given some cool recycled handles from a friend that does construction. Any handles would do really - the ones we have are SUPER LONG. I had Brian drill some holes in the wood frame, and now my large and busted picture frame is now a cool 'serving tray'.

Grandma can serve drinks/snacks on it to her friends when they come over.

This cost me $0 to do, as these are all things I had stuffed in closets at home.

Here is a copy of the poem too, if you can't read it on my picture. :)

I'm growing up so fast
See how big I've gotten
since you saw me last
As I grow, I'll change a lot,
The years will fly right by.
You'll wonder how I grew so quick.
When and where and why?
So look upon this handprint
That's hanging on your wall.
And memories will come back of me,
When I was very small.
I love you Grandma!

Denise - I used 'embroidery floss'. I got a bag of multicolors a few years ago, and I swear it like magically creates more. I feel like I'll never run out. haha

no way!!!!!! regular thread!! that would make me batty. U have to get the fat stuff. It's awesome and easy to work w/ - Any fabric store will have it in a bag. OR, sometimes you can find those cheesey embroidery sets on clearance and they come w/ a ton of thread.

if someone wasnt into the fabric you can always trace the hand and woodburn it

Thats cool Cowboy!

Ya Meg I know, my grandmother used to embroider with reg thread, so when I did it I used the same technique, very time consuming every stitch has to be just so.

Ive got to get some floss though, youve inspired me :)

Cowboy!!!!!!!!!! That ebay pict - haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa...classic.

I love the woodburning idea too. I used to have a wood burner (iron?) as a kid and i used it EVERYWHERE. I would practice on every piece of scrap wood I could find, and sometimes do some 'unapproved' art on my bedroom walls - which were pine plank wood (like a cabin). My Dad still lives there, and I have my daughter go hunt down the illicit artwork.

Funny Meg! Has she found any good ones?

I will never forget when Kris was like 4 he said Mama is A$$Hole a bad word, I had to hold back the laughter, yes kris that is a word you cant say. He said it so plainly and calm just like any other word.

That turned out really great. Did you get some embroidery floss to use?

I did! Well it doesnt say embroidery floss, it says its for friendship bracelets and other crafts. Looked like floss to me though, its thick.

It worked out good and I know my Nan and Pop will love it! Kris did alot of it, he thought it was fun!

I also wanted to mention that I got pieces of felt from the craft store a big bag for 4.99 and I didnt realize untill I got home it was called eco-fil, made from 100 recycled plastic! How sweet is that :) There is so many things I can do with that stuff, I was really excited. AND it was made in the usa, what are the odds ;)

Have noticed that some of the yarn companies are coming out with eco yarn made from recycled cotton, etc.

It's hard to find anything made in the USA. Have been looking for fabric but not able to find any.

gotta be some usa yarn. i suppose at the least it comes from a plant and is renewable so it ought to be fairly eco friendly. more so than some nasty synthetics. then again i guess a lot of fleece comes from recycled plastic....

hmmm, i have figured out how to make damn near everything else i need or want....i wonder about spinning yarn.

It can be done cowboy!!!

Read this article and you'll be shocked at how much pesticides are in cotton (http://www.grist.org/advice/ask/2009/01/28/fabric/?source=ask)
