Hi All,
After seeing all the nonstop commericals on TV for flowers, pajamagrams, teddy bears, my level of annoyance to Valentine's Day is at maximum capacity.
I personally don't need a holiday to tell my family/loved ones that I care for them. I'm not completely bah-humbuging it, but I think you catch my drift. We still make cards, and do special things to celebrate, but it's the overload on ca-ca that I can't handle. I actually excited
to help out at my daughter's Valentine's Day party at school - mainly because kids are so darn cute, and at this age everything is new and fun. They aren't jaded and annoyed like me!! haha
To help spread a little love to those who really need it , we are making "We Care" packages for Seniors thru meals on wheels.
Meals on wheels is an awesome program, and I believe most cities have it.
These care packages are easy and cheap to do, and I finally have a good use for all those small boxes I have loaded up in my garage. We are decorating the boxes w/ bright fun colors and designs (not holiday specific). These will be given to seniors on their birthdays, or at M.O.W. discretion. Here are the details if you are interested in doing the same in your community - again, these don't have to be big expensive boxes..just basics that seniors may need and appreciate:
WE CARE PACKAGES
If you are unable to donate your time, but still want to get involved, consider making We Care Packages at home! During the holidays and for every birthday, volunteers provide our seniors with a special goodie bag to say, “We Care.” We Care Packages can be brightly covered shoe boxes or decorated paper shopping bags filled with useful and fun food, toiletries and small personal items. Packages can include a personal note of well wishes from students and volunteers.
Please follow the guidelines so we can ensure your contribution reaches our seniors.
1.
Use a shoe box or gift bag for the package. See attached guidelines.
2.
Cushion contents with bright tissue or wrapping paper to make it more festive.
Fill the box or gift bag with new, unopened, labeled items from the following list:
•
toothbrushes and toothpaste
•
sharpened pencils, pens, highlighters
•
stationery, note cards
•
stamped envelopes
•
sport socks and/or slippers
•
magnifying glasses, small first aid kits
•
post-it-notes
•
puzzle books! (large print helpful)
•
pot holders, jar top grippers, etc.
•
regular-size shampoo, conditioner, mouthwash, lotion
•
deodorant, travel size cotton balls, Q-tips, sewing kits and tissues.
•
combs/brushes (packaged), nail clippers, emery boards
Please: No food. Many of our seniors are on special diets!!
No advertising-- especially of prescription or over-the-counter medicines.
3.
Add a bright note card as a personal touch if you like. Because many of our seniors are in unique and stressful situations a general birthday greeting (“Happy Birthday,” “Thinking of You” etc.) is most appropriate. We welcome groups placing their name on these cards.
