View Full Version : Sling or pouch?

I have a question for the mothers out there...When my daughter was a baby, I used a Snugli to carry her around. It was comfy for her, but inconvenient for breastfeeding. So this time around, I have been researching slings and pouches. I can't really decide between them, as I haven't really figured out how they differ. I know that they work a bit differently, and have read the pros and cons of each, but I am looking for any personal preferences of moms that have used them. Any thoughts?

I love, love, love slings over pouches.
For my son I used a maya wrap sling, that worked out beautifully. I was able breastfeed in it easily and the tail also doubles as privacy screen (if you are worried about that). My son never wanted anything over him so I never used it as such.
It worked great for front carrying for bfeeding and smaller infants and as they get older it transitioned into an easy back carrier (I still slung him around till he was older than 3).
My sister then used my wrap for both of her kids, and I wasn't able to get it back from her, in order to use it for my granddaughter so I purchased another brand of sling, which I like, but not as much as my maya wrap.
(I had also initially purchased the maya brand of pouch but returned it for the sling).
Hope that helps!

I thought mine was a sling but it was the one piece type so maybe you'd call it a pouch? Anyway I loved it because it was really simple and I didn't have to worry about hooking it correctly. It was a New Native brand and was very convenient for breast feeding and when the baby was little but I didn't think it worked as well once they were older and wanted to be up and look around. I have friends that used them with older children though so maybe it was just me.
I also think it may have to do with your life-style and if you plan on using it mostly at home, say when your making dinner or cleaning, or out and about. I personally loved the pouch for at home and I think the "tail" from a wrap would have gotten in the way but, I think a wrap would have been more convenient for going on walks or to festivals and such
Sorry for the book, hope it helps though.:D

Thanks for the ideas...I am continuing my research. Basically I think I need someone just to tell me which one to buy...;)

You should definitely get the wrap then because I am on the fence between the two. If you would, give us a report after you get it and let me know what you think. :D

OK here's my .02!! (maybe only worth .0123242 cents)
I think the sling, by nature, is more comfy for baby and they sleep better. It is great for breast feeding too - this is great if you're out visiting friends, or walking around town and want baby to sleep.
The snuggli is awesome for doing chores around the house or cruising around outside - with an awake baby.
I felt like I was able to do everything wearing the snuggli - but my daughter would not sleep in that thing. However, I was able to get stuff done and have her w/ me the whole time.
So that probably doens't help u one little bit.
Look on Craiglist for a cheap snuggli & get a cool sling. See, this is why my opinion is only worth .0123242 cents. :D

Okay...I'll check out the Maya sling. My daughter never slept in the Snuggli either, it was just nice to be able to carry her around in while I did housework. I've still got that, so I'll try the sling with this baby, and report back to you. But you have to be patient, because he won't be here until June...:)

We have quite a list for his name right now. Hopefully my husband and I will agree on one before the little guy is born...:D
