Some former CIA chiefs apparently want the US to cover up its intelligence gathering problems during the Bush administration. It's the wrong call.

In late 1975, as a result in particular of his role in Watergate, Bush's confirmation as CIA Director was not automatic. And though the debate at his confirmation was superficial, some senators, including in particular the late Frank Church of Idaho, made some observations about the dangers inherent in the Bush nomination that have turned out in retrospect to be useful.

there are several simple ways to get information out of someone.
the simplest methods being to treat the subject decently and honorably
in a clean warm dry safe place for a few days then converse with them.
get them to boast of their own exploits
either by crediting one of their rivals with 'work' done by the subject
or the 'guy' thing (with a few drinks) 'our team's better than your team' routine.

disrupting circadian rythms (day/night cycle), is another simple group of methods.

information gathered by torture, ala waterboarding or car batteries,
while very fast is of questionable value & accuracy.
the GIGO rule applies to this information,
evidence the 'progress' in Iran & Afghanistan in the previous eight years.

the former CIA directors aren't trying to cover up their questionable activities
so much as their incompetance and waste.
